Gabriel Brull

Gabriel Brull, believed to be the oldest man in Ellis County at 96, died Sunday night at his home, 309 West 14th Street, in Hays, after an illness of two weeks.

Born April 15, 1860 in Obermunjor, Russia, Mr. Brull came to America with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Brull in 1877.

They settled at Topeka where they lived a number of years before coming to Ellis County where Mr. Brull farmed 11 miles southeast of Hays until 1924 when he retired and moved to Hays.

A daughter, Mrs. E. W. Utecht and Mr. Utecht had lived with him here since the death of Mrs. Brull five years ago. Members of the family said Mr. Brull had never been ill a day in his life and had never required the services of a doctor until two weeks ago when the debilities of old age overcame him.

Surviving are nine children: Adam, Two Rivers, Wis., Joe, Kansas City, Kans., Jacob, Isidore, Mrs. Andrew Dinkel, Mrs. E. W. Utecht, Mrs. Mike Arnhold and Mrs. Vernon Moore, Hays, and Mrs. Henry Dechant, Kansas City, Kans. There are 70 grandchildren, 120 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

The body will be at the Brock Funeral Chapel until Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock when the funeral mass will be at St. Joseph's Church with burial at St. Francis Cemetery, Munjor.

Gabriel Brull came to Topeka, Kansas with his parents in 1880. He married Miss Mary Rupp who was also a native of Obermonjour, Russia. Several years later they moved to Ellis

County to a farm eleven miles southeast of Hays, Kansas. In 1924, Gabriel and Mary retired from wheat farming and moved to Hays. Gabriel died at age 98 and Mary died at age 87.
