Gavin (46), was shot in the back of the head on De Poort Farm in Du Toits Kloof on 26th January 2005.

"It's terrible. The shock is now setting in and it's not easy to accept." Cathy de Jager (47), said two days after her husband, Gavin, was overpowered robbers and was shot with his own pistol.

De Jager, a trout farmer was attacked on Wednesday evening while he went for a walk on the farm, presumably noticing trouble at his son's house. He was attacked when he caught the villains in the act. He is believed to have fired a warning shot, but was overpowered and shot in the head.

His son, Dylan de Jager (25), who managed the farm with his father, found his body in the early hours of Thursday morning after he came back from the Paarl.

"I would have liked to have held the funeral service as soon as possible so that everyone who came from afar to assist us, could attend," said Mrs. De Jager. However, experts are still busy with forensic tests, which do not appear to be completed before Monday.
