Generaal Salomon Gerhardus (Manie) Maritz se profiel voor op ‘My Lewe en Strewe’, hierdie rare boek, het dadelik my oog gevang en my verbeelding aangegryp, want ek meet ‘n man uiterlik aan sy nek. ‘n Man met ‘n gespierde nek lol jy nie mee nie. Generaal Manie Maritz het ‘n nek soos ‘n bul gehad en ‘n kyk. ‘n Oop, reguit en sterke kyk waaruit eerlike geen nonsens, duidelik gestraal het. En dit is wat hy inderdaad was en uitgeleef het.

Gebore op Kimberley 26 Julie 1876. Hy sluit op 24 jarige ouderdom aan by die weerstand teen die Jameson inval en verwerf daardeur sy eerstegraadse Transvaalse Burgerskap. Dit was die begin van ‘n asemrowende krygers verhaal.

Hy sterf op 19 Desember 1940 in ‘n motorongeluk voor die sentrale gevangenis in Pretoria – Dit is wat in die populêre geskiedenis opgeteken staan en wat met die Geregtelike Doodsondersoek bevind is...

Boer Officers 1899-1902. Salmon Gerhardus (Manie aka Gerrit) Maritz. Born in Kimberley 26/6/1876 and died 20/12/1940 in Pretoria. Attained Transvaal Republic-ZAR citizenship by participating in the action against Jameson. Jhb ZAR Police corps and with Boksburg Commando and DTV. Rose from Cpl through the ranks to Veggeneraal in January 1902. After Vereeniging did not want to become a British citizen and went variously to German West Africa, Europe and Madagascar. Fought for Germany against the Hereros. In 1914 became a major in the UDF and rebelled as a Lt. Col. Surrendered and was imprisoned and then lived in Portugal and Spain till 1920. In 1923 he was arrested and found guilty on a charge of high treason and released after 3 months in prison. Became a supporter of National-Socialism. Died in a motor accident in Pretoria. Published his memoirs “My lewe en Strewe”.
