About Genevieve Mary Hawrysh

Genevieve (Jenny) Mary Hawrysh

Jenny was born March 9, 1917 in Dauphin, MB, to Louis and Catherine (Woytowich) Koshey. She was educated in the public school system in Dauphin where she excelled as a sprinter in track and field events, bringing many awards home to the school. She graduated from high school and went on to complete Registered Nurses training at St. Anthonys Hospital in The Pas, returning to Dauphin following graduation on May 29, 1941.

On August 12 of that year she married her childhood sweetheart, Steve Hawrysh. During their nearly 54 years of marriage, Steve and Jenny entered many ventures together. With Steve on the front lines, Jenny was kept busy adeptly running the behind the scenes show, along with caring for their own six children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and an ongoing stream of "adopted" hockey players. There was always room at her table and an extra bedroom or two available.

Jenny continued to be active in the lives of all her loved ones, rejoicing in their many varied accomplishments. She was an avid reader and stayed current on the daily events, always ready to offer her opinion. While her health permitted, Jennys vast garden was her pride and joy. She also enjoyed her ongoing weekly Sunday visits with her sisters.

The Koshey family were original parishioners of St. Viators Roman Catholic Church, where Jenny remained an active member attending weekly services. She was also a charter member of the C.W.L., receiving recognition of 50 years of service in 1999.

Predeceased by her parents, husband Steve, daughter Sharon, brother Joe, son-in-law Carl Johanson. Jenny is survived by daughters, Janice Johanson (Gord) and Alexis; sons, Wayne (Nancy), Edmund (Cathy), Ray (Kathy). She will also be sadly missed by grandchildren, Shannon (Murray), Colleen, Steven (friend Willow), Shayna (Troy), Eric (friend Tara), and Cassie; great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Taryn and Eric; sisters, Elizabeth Zaplitny, Rose Koshey and Anne Farrell (Frank) sisters-in-law, Mary Koshey, Betty Solar (Lawrence) and numerous nieces and nephews. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.

The St. Viators Roman Catholic Church Catholic Womens League led a rosary service on Wednesday evening, February 28 at St. Viators Roman Catholic Church in Dauphin, at 8:00 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial, in celebration of her life, was held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, at St. Viators Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Mark A. Tarrant officiated and interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. Her grandchildren were honorary pallbearers according to Jennys wishes.
