About Wayne Steven Hawrysh
Wayne began his career in Hockey as a young boy living in Dauphin Manitoba, where he found his love for the sport alongside his father, Steve “Boomer” Hawrysh, a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
During the 1966-67 season, he played for the MB-SK Jr. B Champion Dauphin Red Wings in the SWIHL and then played the following three seasons (1967-68, 1968-69, 1969-70) with the Flin Flon Bombers of the WCHL.
In 176 games with the Bombers, he registered 208 points, including 84 goals, won two league championships, hoisted the James Piggott Trophy as Canadian Dominion Champions and also totaled 488 penalty minutes. Wayne was an extremely good player on some terrific Flin Flon teams and the numbers tell you he could score and that he was tough.
Drafted by the Detroit Red Wings 33rd overall in round number 3 of the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft, Wayne played in six leagues over the course of his career. The American Hockey League, the Eastern Hockey League, the North American Hockey League, the Southern Hockey League, the South West Hockey league & the Western Hockey league; where he played for nine teams – the Broome County Dusters, the Cape Cod Cubs, the Dauphin Red Wings, the Flin Flon Bombers, the Jacksonville Rockets, the Jersey Devils, the Long Island Cougars, the Richmond Robins and the Suncoast Suns.
After retiring from playing, Wayne began his coaching career back home in Dauphin where he served as the Dauphin Kings (MJHL) assistant coach during the 1974 -75 season and then as Head coach in 1975-76.
Wayne then moved to The Pas where he brought his love for the sport and dedicated his desire to inspire youth in hockey.
In the Spring of 1996 Nathan McGillivary came into "Everythings" and told Wayne they were going to Winnipeg the next day to meet with the MJHL and Frank McKinnon to get a franchise for OCN and would like Wayne to go with them. They went to Winnipeg and got the club.
Wayne was one of the founding members of the Blizzard along with Gilbert "Rat" Lathlin, the late Chief Francis Flett, the late Gordon Lathlin, Don Lathlin, Jim Smith, Nathan McGillivary and Bo Brochevich.
From there it all began. It was an awesome team and a great board of directors. They use to call Wayne “Mr Everything” as he was the assistant coach, governor and director of hockey operations. He held those positions for the first 3 years and then continued to help out as assistant coach for most of the next 15 years. His last winter was 2012-13 when he came home from Texas to help Clay and Derek.
