About Geoffrey Norris

Geoffrey Noreys was born 1560 in England, and died 1609.

He married Anne Mary Myles on June 02, 1588 in County Norfolk, England. She was born Abt. 1568 in County Norfolk, England, and died Abt. 1609 in Congham, County Norfolk, England

Children of Geoffrey and Anne Mary Noreys are:

  1. Cuthbert Norris, b. 1601, England.
  2. Alice Norris, b. 1603, England.
  3. Elizabeth Norris, b. 1605, England.
  4. Edmund Norris, b. 1607, England.
  5. Thomas Norris, b. Abt. 1608, Congham County, Norfolk, England; d. November 1675, Talbot County, Maryland.

These dates look odd. The children don't appear until 13 years after marriage, then arrive one per year. They are different dates than the ones presented by Stephen R. Pain (last entry at the bottom of the page), although there is consensus that Thomas was born in abt 1608. I'm curious as to why Thomas ran away to sea at 11 yeas old. From here, it appears his father died when he was about one. We also have recorded that his mother died at about the same time. I've noticed other family groups of King's Lynn ancestors all dying in the early 1600's and I haven't been able to find out why. The years don't correspond particularly with Black Plague epidemic, although that was definitely a recurring scourge of the times. Children were apparently more affected, but these deaths are occurring in adults. Norwich, after this time undertook to clean up the city, as disease was a huge problem. The plague also undermined the population numbers which had the effect of limiting the ability of communities to produce the food that was needed.

❧ Congham

Congham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated some 10 km east of the town of King's Lynn and 55 km west of the city of Norwich. (Wikipedia)

A History of King's Lynn

England is a country, not a state. In the 1500's Congham was and still is, a village in England. The collective group sometimes known as the British Isles didn't become the United Kingdom until 1707 when Scotland was merged with the Kingdom of England (England and Wales), becoming the Kingdom of Great Britain. Eventually the United Kingdom was formed including Northern Ireland. This is different to composition of the United States.

Notes

Geoffrey Norris born 15.., son of John Norris and Alice Might, is probably the Jeffrey Norris named in 1600/1 in the will of Thomas Might who was probably his uncle. Geoffrey was named executor of the will of his brother Edmund in 1609 (1- 5). His four children were Alice, Elizabeth, Edmund, Thomas.

Geoffrey was possibly the Jeffrey Norris named as the executor of Thomas MIght's will in 1600. The latter person was possibly his uncle, brother of his Mother, Alice

Geoffrey was also named as executor of his brother, Edmund, in 1609.

Geoffrey Norris was the beloved son of John Norris and Alice Might. Geoffrey was born in 1565 in Congham, Norfolk, England and died in 1609 in Congham, Norfolk, England at the age of 44. He was possibly the Geoffrey Norris named as the executor of Thomas Might's will in 1600. The latter was possibly his uncle, brother to Geoffrey's mother, Alice. Geoffrey was named executor in the will of his brother, Edmund, in 1609. Geoffrey married Anne Mary Myles on Jun. 2, 1588 in Grimston, Norfolk, England. Burial: Congham, Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Borough, Norfolk, England.

If you go, also visit nearby Castle Acre, where the NORRIS tribe also lived and also their ancestors the DE WARENNE, who built the castle there (now in ruins). The nearest city is King's Lynn, which was just LYNN when Thomas left for America.

"Who was the lady who married Jeffery Noreys a.k.a. Geoffrey Norris and is the mother of Thomas Norris the English immigrant from Congham, Norfolk, England?
With one exception all of the sources that I have read referring to the parents of Thomas Norris the immigrant, report that his father was Geoffrey Norris or Jefffery Norris and that his mother was Anne! Davis identified a Geoffrey Norris as Thomas' father but only list Geoffrey's spouse as ___.
The same reference lists John Norris and ___ Might of Bunthrope as Thomas grandparents. Josserand does not attempt to identify the parents of Thomas the immigrant.
The Vistitaion of Norfolk lists Jeffery Norris m. Anne ___. LDS records Batch A184641 identifies a Mary Myles as the spouse of Jeffery Noreys/Geoffrey Norris and the mother of the immigrant Thomas Norris!
By stating:

1) Mary Myles IGI/British Isles Gender F. birth 2 Jun. 1588 Guinston, Norfolk, England.
2) Mary Myles IGI/British Isles Gender F marriage 2 Jun 1588 Grimston, Norfolk, England. Note the birth and marriage dates are the same! This researcher has yet to find a community identical as "Guniston" in Norfolk, but the community of Grimston, Norfolk is a logical marriage place, as it is about 2 miles south of Congham, Norfolk, England, the resident home of the Norris family.

Summary: Could Anne ___ and Mary Myles be the same person? i.e. Ann Mary Myles or Mary Ann Myles! I have spent the last three or four years trying to prove the Mary Myles marriage and have been unsuccessful! I believe that there is enough evidence presented in references to allow me to list the mother of Thomas Norris (the immigrant) as Anne (___) Norris/Noreys.
I am unable to consider Mary Myles as the spouse of Jeffery Noreys/Geoffrey Norris and/or the mother of my emigrant ancestor Thomas Norris, due to the lack of proof (or reasonable) documentation.

The Family of Norris in Norfolk by Walter Rye, (book, published in about 1906 by Norfolk historian).

The following is from Find a Grave records created by Stephen R. Pain.

The information below and on other Find a Grave memorials can't be used as historical sources unless they are found inscriptions from the churches themselves. These ones have been written in modern times. They are nice memorials to our ancestors. However, historical records are: Parish records from the churches, Bishops transcripts, (copies made of the parish records), College of Arms Visitations, Wills, Tax and court records, other writings made in the era, and carefully checked historical books from people such as Walter Rye, the Norfolk Records Society and the Norfolk Office of Records.
