❧ Biography of Thomas Norris

CASTLE RISING

Family and Education
1st s. of John Norris of Congham by Alice, da. of Robert Might of Flitcham. educ. I. Temple 1572, ancient 1601. m. 30 Dec. 1583, Elizabeth, da. of Humphrey Guybon of Castle Acre, 2s. 1da. suc. fa. 1572.

Career
Norris never achieved the status of a Norfolk j.p. though his marriage to the sister of a fellow-member of the Inner Temple, Thomas Guybon, must have brought him connexions with the gentry in the neighbourhood of Lynn and Castle Rising. His return for the latter borough in 1586 was probably due to his friendship with Edward Coke, his near-contemporary at the Inner Temple, whom he made overseer of his will. Norris died 4 Nov. 1607, leaving his lands to his elder son and his goods to his daughter Alice. Two of his executors were his brother Cuthbert and his ‘loving uncle’ William Guybon. Norris was not the man who was deputy to the vice-chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster in 1574.

❧ Children of Thomas Norris and Elizabeth Guybon are:

  1. Thomas Norris was born in Norfolk County, Eng. .. married daughter of Christopher Hyrne. He was living in 1635 in Anmere.
  2. Alice Norris was born in Norfolk County, Eng.
  3. Robert Norris was born in Norfolk County, Eng, and died in Norfolk County, Eng, before 18 FEB 1638, when his will was probated.

❧ Congham

Congham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated some 10 km east of the town of King's Lynn and 55 km west of the city of Norwich. (Wikipedia)
England is a country, not a state. In the 1500's Congham was and still is, a village in England. The collective group sometimes known as the British Isles didn't become the United Kingdom until 1707 when Scotland was merged with the Kingdom of England (England and Wales), becoming the Kingdom of Great Britain. Eventually the United Kingdom was formed including Northern Ireland.

❧ Notes

Named in the will of Humphrey Guybon pg 184 - Visitation to Norfolk 15-- 4 August 1601, Thomas Norris, still living

The parents have a marriage date of 1583 therefore these siblings were likely to have been born from 1584 and onwards.

Early records from the book by Major H. A. Davis (1941), should be used as a guide - not a source. The best sources are church records made at the time, and secondly, books by English historians. It is easier for English historians to provide correct information as they had better access to records than Major Davis, who was able to record his findings during a visit. I also note that 1941 was during WWII. - JG (descendant of Thomas Norris and Elizabeth Guybon).

According to Rye, Thomas is known to be from Congham and his son Robert is "of Tuddenham." Ursula Norris also mentions Anmere. I wonder if "Anmere" refers to Thomas's son Thomas.

Notes from Steven Norris

I am Steven D Norris who posted many years ago in Netcom, a site that has long since closed. My family history is now available on Ancestry.com. The name is Norris followed by a date in 2015 (can't recall it!).
The source for the will of Edward Norris of Salem MA and his ancestors were all obtained through the Mormon church film library. I will attempt to place photos of the originals on my ancestry page.
The majority of the older data can all be found in a book titled Norris Deeds which a librarian in Bristol was nice enough to copy and send me. If course it wasn't cheap but it enabled me to work clear back to Geoffrey me Norreys of about 1140.
I recently hired a genealogist in Gloucestershire who has proved that Edward Norris of Salem was married first to Elizabeth Staunton in 1610 in Alderley. She died in 1618, possibly giving birth to John although we have not yet found a baptism record. Eleanor was his second wife and is not the mother of the children . Elizabeth's father was Vicar John Staunton of Wotton Under Edge where Elizabeth was born.
I have more and will update my ancestry site soon with this new information. Our connection to royals is through Sylvester Anna Poyntz, the mother of Edward Norris of Salem. Her husband Edward died young and she married Christipher Kingsxote of Alderley where young Edward if Salem was raised, his dad dying when he was only 4 years old.
More to come on Ancestry.com. (dated 24 Dec 2016)
