Biography

Alternate spellings: Aldrich and Aldridge.

According to the Aldrich genealogy published in 1996 by Harl Preslar Aldrich, Jr, George Aldrich was born about 1605 in Derbyshire, England to George George Aldrich and Joan Thurgood.[1] He married Katherine Seald September 3, 1629, in Derbyshire.[1] She was born about 1610.[1] According to Osborne he said "God brought me to America, from Derbyshiare, in England, November 6th 1631."[2] The ship they arrived in is undocumented. George Aldrich was a freeman and member of the Church of Dorchester, Massachusetts by 7 Dec 1636. [3] [4][5][6][7] [8] He was a tailor by trade.[7] In Dorchester he had a one-acre houselot.[9]

He Removed to Braintree in 1640 where he was granted a 20-acre parcel of land in Mt. Wollaston (which became Braintree).[1][7] On June 9, 1663, George Aldridge, tailor, and Katherine his wife sold their land in Braintree to Richard Thayer for 30 pounds sterling and removed to Mendon.[7][10] The Braintee property is described in Suffolk county deeds: one dwelling house at Montreol in Braintree, 2 orchards, 8 acres bounded east and west on Richard Thayer north, and Joseph Crosky, South on Montreol River.[10] He was one of the first six settlers of Mendon.[8][1]

Samuel Austin Bates, clerk of Braintree states that after the sale of his land to Richard Thayer that George Aldrich purchased another 240 acres of land afterwards called "the Aldridge's farm" situated near Great Pond in Braintree. George Aldrich sold this land to a Mr. Deafie in 1677. This farm for a great many years continued to be called the Aldrich farm and the lane leading to it was called Aldrich Lane. This lane is now made into a street and called West Street. It is possible he repurchased land in Braintree due to King Phillips War which ended on 12 Aug. 1676. Afterwards he returned to Mendon.[11] [12] Additionally Osbourne claims he was in Sanzey in 1669 and 1670.[2]

His house lot in Mendon of 40 acres is described in the proprietors records of Mendon as follows: "George Aldrich's 40 acre house lot is bounded as followeth. Southerly part ly upon the house lot of Daniel Lovett and partly upon the house lot of Jo seph Stevens. Northerly upon the house lot of John Wearbor in part and par tly upon a two rod way leading from one ten rod highway to the other. East erly upon a small run of water. Westerly upon the towns common with a t en rod highway--said lot. Laid out by M. Flint and Josiah Chapin."[13]

He left a will in Mendon, Massachusetts, dated Nov. 2, 1682, probated on 26 April, 1683.[7] In his will he names his wife and children: Joseph, John, Jacob, Mary, Sarah Bartlett, Mercy Randall and Martha Dunbar.[7] He died 1 MAR 1681/82. [13b] His wife Katharine was 60 years old when she was deposed in 1670.[7]

Cutter describes The tablet at Founder's Park in Mendon, Massachusetts erected in memory of the founders of Mendon: "The Old Mother Town", settled 1663, incorporated 1667, lists as the first three meeting houses, in 1668; Ferdinando Thayer, George Aldrich, Daniel Lovett, John Moore, John Woodland, John Harbor, Mathias Puffer, Joseph White, John Thompson, Wlater Cook, Abraham Staples, John Gurney and John Rockwood. In 1680 it lists Samuel Hayward, William Holbrook, Angel Torrey, and in 1690 it lists Robert Taft, Benjamin Wheelock, Josiah Chapin, James Keith and Eleazer Daniels."[14] This cenotaph can be seen at Find A Grave Memorial# 20065947. However, both he and wife Katherine have existing 17th Century Headstones in The George Aldrich Cemetery in Uxbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts. You may view his headstone at Find A Grave Memorial# 149400448.

In 1663 they came to the region which was incorporated four years later as Mendon. George and his family were among the seven proprietor families of Mendon. The family may have moved to Swansea for a few years, returning to Mendon by 1680. George Aldrich was a tailor. He died March 1, 1683 and his wife Katherine died January 11, 1691, both in Mendon. A tablet in Founders' Park in Mendon lists George Aldrich among the proprietors."

"ALDRICH FAMILY. George Aldrich (1), was the immigrant ancestor of the Aldrich family of Mendon and Uxbridge. The name was spelled Aldridge and Oldridge in the early records, and some branches of the family still prefer the spelling Aldridge, but the famous Rhode Island family and the descendants in Worcester county, Massachusetts, have for many generations adopted the spelling Aldrich.

George Aldrich was born in Derbyshire, England, about 1605. He was a tailor by trade. He sailed for America, November 6, 1631. He married in England, September 3, 1629, Catherine Seald. She was born in 1610 according to her deposition made June 18, 1670, when she gave her age as sixty years. Aldrich was admitted a freeman December 7, 1636. He settled first in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and he, with his wife Catherine, was member of the Dorchester Church in 1636. He was granted land in Boston in 1640, lived in Braintree from about 1640 to 1663, and was one of the first seven settlers of Mendon. He sold his place at Braintree to Richard Thayer, June 9, 1663. He died at Mendon. He died March 1, 1682. His wife died there January 11, 1691.

md. Derbyshire, England, 3 Sep. 1629, Katherine Seald

He arrived in New England 6 Nov. 1631 and settled initially at Dorchester, and then c. 1640 removed to Braintree before finally settling at Mendon c. 1663. They were among the first seven settlers there. Also there is no historical proof that George Aldrich was part of the entourage that sailed on the Mayflower. Again, "no proof"'
He was a tailor by trade and the ancestor of nearly all New England Aldrich lines.
