About George Archer, Sr.

In 1636, George Archer, son of John Archer and Mary Langdon, came to Virginia as an indentured servant. His voyage was funded by Justinian Cooper, an investor who transported servants for land. When these indentured servants arrived in Virginia, Cooper received fifty acres per head from the Colonial Government. Cooper transported twenty people, including Archer, on this voyage and received 1,000 acres for his investment.

An indentured servant usually worked seven to ten years to pay off his voyage. His service could include many forms of work, but farm labor was common. Once his service period ended, George himself would receive fifty acres. With this he could begin his own life as a land-owner.

George originally landed in Warrasquenock County (now Isle of Wight), Virginia. Nothing is known about his life there, but, given the time and custom, he probably worked in the Tobacco fields. About 1655 he was granted 50 acres on Tunstall’s Creek, Bermuda Hundred, in Henrico (now Chesterfield) County. This was probably the grant due him from his servitude. In addition to this land, he would have received enough grain to maintain him one year, two suits (one of kersey , the other of cotton) a pair of canvas drawers, two shirts, one felt hat and a gun worth twenty shillings.

To supplement the land he received for his servitude, George took up the task of transporting servants, just like Justinian Cooper before him. Before he died he had been granted at least 3,029 acres. He sold some of this land, however. In 1704, his son, George II, owned 1,738 acres. By then, however, the Archers were by far the largest land holders of Henrico County.

George died in 1676 and appointed his son, George Jr., as his executor.

Francis Epes came to America from England with three sons and thirty servants. When they granted him a patent 26 August 1635 , he listed his servants by name. One was George Archer. How long Archer remained in the service of Francis Epes , we do not know. Not until 1655 did George Archer obtain a patent for 550 acres in Henrico (now Chesterfield) County.

George Archer is considered to have been of the Umberslade Archers of Warwickshire, England. He established his home at "Archer?s Hall? near present-day Colonial Heights, Chesterfield County, Virginia, and added to his plantation over the year s by securing additional land patents and by buying neighboring real estate. His individual patents were 250 acres in 1663 , 784 acres in 1671 , and 1,393 acres in 1673 . Thomas Mudgett sold Archer 125 acres next to land he already owned on th e Appomattox River 22 October 1663 .

Archer had a will though we no longer have a copy of it. Consequently, we cannot identify all of his children. We do not know who his wife, Mary - , was. Historians once believed George married the daughter of Maj. Gen. Abraham Wood, yet the Gen eral's will mentioned no Archers.

George I died after 24 November 1675 when he wrote his will and before 16 March 1675/6 when Henrico County granted George Archer II administration of his father?s estate . Deed records confirm that George?s widow, Mary, later married Joseph Roya ll II (1646 - 1732) who became the guardian of Archer?s orphans .

Children of George and Mary ? Archer were George II, Margery, Elizabeth, Ann, John Archer I and perhaps others.
