About George Archer, Jr.

George Archer II was born in 1654. When he was twenty-two, he inherited his father’s plantations.
He married Elizabeth Harris in 1688 when he was 34.
They had seven children:

  1. George III,
  2. William,
  3. Blanche,
  4. Judith,
  5. Elizabeth,
  6. Margery and
  7. Mary

They were active in the church, as was everyone in those days.
Later in life he was appointed as a vestryman of Bristol Parish.
With the power of the Anglican Church in the early days of Virginia, this was a position of local power and influence and demonstrates he was a man of good reputation and influence.

George continued to expand the family’s holding by transporting servants.
In 1690 George and several compatriots received 2,827 acres in Henrico Co for the “transportation of 57 negroes”.
This was the continuing practice of getting land for transporting settlers, much like when Cooper paid for the voyage of George I and his nineteen companions.
The people transported ended up as permanent slaves, but the laws and customs at the time were still treating these arrangements as a form of indentured servitude.

The Archer lands produced tobacco, as did most Virginia farms at that time.
They would have also grown vegetables and livestock for the family and farm hands to eat, but tobacco was king.

George II died in 1729 at the age of 75. He left his land to his sons George and William.
He also left some to his daughter, Blanch’s, husband.
