About George Albert Bramston
Margaret Shaw's 2nd husband was George Bramston whom she married in Melbourne Australia in the 1850s. He had been born in 1826 at Marylebone London England. Family hearsay is that he descended from the prestigious Bramston family from Essex London. George's parents were Thomas Bramston and Sarah Goodenough. I have found records of another Thomas Bramston having children by Eliza Harvey (daughter of Lord Harvey of Trafalgar fame) and their children were baptised at the ancestral home 'Skreens' in Essex as well as at Marylebone London. I am aware it was quite common to have mistresses in those days so wonder if it is the same Thomas - with no offence to anyone! Regardless I feel sure Margaret's husband George Bramston must be related somehow to this Essex family as the surname is not common. I must admit though that I discovered I descend from Margaret's first husband (name unknown) but I am still very interested in the Bramston line of her husband. I'm equally as interested in Sarah Goodenough's ancestry if anyone is related to that line. Valerie Wotton Sydney, Australia
Interestingly I have discovered that Margaret had son her George "Bramston" at the age of 18. Following this she meets and marries George Bramston in 1955. George came to Vic in 1851. He was 25 years of age. I am assuming Margaret had come over with her son George prior to meeting and marrying George Bramston in Vic in 1955. Margaret then has 3 girls with George Bramston, all of which pass away at the young age of 16 (Margaret), 22 (Alice) and 25 (Julia). The 22 year old (Alice) is the only one of the 3 girls who gave birth to a girl in 1895. Then this 1 year old passes away within a year of both Margaret (her grand mother) and Alice (her mother). I also learned that Julia (25 year old) committed suicide using Salt of Lemon due to her struggles with Neuralgia. So George Andrew Bramston actually adopts the Bramston name. Then I find an obituary for George Bramston and it says its reporting from his daughter Mrs A. H. Singleton also from Vic. Definitely more to this story as I don't yet know who he had A. H. Singleton with??? And exactly when? George had only been in Vic for 4 years before he marries Margaret. More to come... Emma Bramston, Sydney, Australia
