Biography

GEORGE BROWN, born ca. 1680, Eastham, Massachusetts; died there ca. 1735; buried Cove Burying Ground, Eastham (“Here lies the body of George Eastham Dec’d ye 18th of January 173? in the 51st year of his age”);[1] married ELIZABETH (MULFORD?), born ca. 1682, Eastham, died December 1744, in her 63rd year, Eastham, also buried in Cove Burying Ground. Elizabeth’s surname may be inaccurate, but one researcher (David Kew) declares that if she was a Mulford, her only possible parents were THOMAS MULFORD and ELIZABETH BARNES.[2] Elizabeth Brown married (2) [intention] 23 November 1739, Eastham, Elisha Higgins (born 11 February 1677 in Eastham). George and Elizabeth may be parents of: Ebenezer Brown. Established(?) children: Elizabeth Brown, born 1703 (source?) in Eastham (married 21 September 1727, Eastham, John Smith, born 17 April 1703, Eastham, son of John Smith and Bethia Snow) and Bathshua [Bathsheba/Bershebe] Brown, born ca. 1710 in Eastham (married 9 April 1729, Eastham, Stephen Smith, son of John Smith and Bethia Snow; Stephen’s first wife was Hannah Collins, a daughter of John Collins and Hannah Doane, and granddaughter of Joseph Collins and Ruth Knowles; a daughter of Joseph and Ruth—Sarah Collins—married John Smith and became the mother of Rebecca Smith, who married Ebenezer Brown).

Elisha Higgins’ first wife was Jane Collins, another daughter of Joseph Collins & Ruth Knowles; his second was Elizabeth (Mulford?) Brown; his third was Rachel (______) Hopkins of Harwich.

CHILDREN

Children of George and Elizabeth (Mulford?) BROWN, these and probably others, since (apparently) a portion of the Eastham VR that might have listed the children of George Brown is missing:

↑ I cannot find this birth record in Eastham or Chatham, although I searched both of them. There is also no birth record for Elizabeth Brown (who married John Smith). No birth record for Elizabeth, Ebenezer, or Bathshua, whose birth date can be calculated, however, from her tombstone.

Gravestone inscription: HER LIES THE BODY OF GEORGE BROWN OF EASTHAM DEC'D Ye 18th OF JANUARY 173? IN THE 51st YEAR OF HIS AGE

Notes

  1. "The sandstone gravestone displays a winged skull. Severe surface erosion obscures the inscription and carved image. The 1905 survey of Cove reported that George Brown died January 18, 175? in his 51st year and the surface of his gravestone was worn. This inscription information was included in the 1976 survey as the gravestone was unreadable in 1976. In 2005 genealogical researcher C S of Boston determined from records that George Brown was born about 1685 and died before 1738 rather than in the 1750's. It is a common error on old stones to read "3" as "5"."
  2. "The data for the Brown family is poor, so far. Caveat lector."
