Following from the research of the late John D. Baldwin III: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GEORGE JR. (3-1-4) b. ca 1776, probably in Fannett Twp., Cumberland (now Franklin) Co., PA. He was under 45 in 1820. (Another source has b. 1776 in Mifflin Co., PA)
1790 - In parents' home Mifflin (now Centre) Co., PA.
1799 - probably with parents in Ohio Co., (W)Va.
1802 - would have settled with parents in Guernsey (then Belmont) Co., OH.
1803-5 - arrived in Kentucky about this time. Ely's "The Big Sandy Valley" says he arrived unmarried, coming from Muskingum Co., OH at or near Zanesville. Note his father had bought land, now in Noble Co., OH, at the Zanesville Land Office perhaps as early as 1805.
1806 - md. about this time Mary Barbara "Polly" Auxier born KY, Dec 7, 1784(Another source has Feb 7, 1784 in Russell, Culpepper Co., VA). (Auxier family gene. has Mary Rebecca "Polly"). Agnes Auxier, a grand-daughter of Polly's brother Samuel Jr. wrote Mrs. G. Galbraith (of Paintsville, KY, 1969) that aunt Polly married in her early youth [more likely she was 20 or 21] to George Delong who had come from the Muskingum River of Ohio. Nothing further is likely to be learned of the date from Floyd Co. KY land records, those for 1800-1808 were mostly burned.
1807-8 - birth of first child.
1808-9 - second child was born KY (three censuses confirm, one says OH).
1809 - In May, his brother Joseph either gave or was given a 500-acre mortgage deed to or by Thomas Brown in Floyd Co., KY.
1809 - In May, George and others were ordered to call their hands to erect a bridge across the 'gut' below Thomas Even's field (Floyd Co. Order Book).
1809 - George Brown, Samuel Brown and others were added to George Delong's hands (August Court).
1809 - George and others were to help with the opening of the road near the mouth of Brandy Cag to Cralk's Hill (Oct Court).
1810 - Brother Joseph had credit levy allowed by John Haws (Feb Court).
1810 - George and Joseph returned to Ohio, probably after above Feb. record but prior to May when George Brown replaced George Delong as surveyor of the road from Abbott to the Little Paint River. The work schedule included reference to "Delong's old place". The Delongs do not appear in the Floyd Co. census of 1810; that for most of Ohio is not extant. Records of the Zanesville Ohio Land Office show that George and Joseph had land in present Holmes Co., Ohio, 157 acres in Range 6, Twp., 8, Sect. 5. My notes for this show 1807-? which may be doubtful as they were both in KY at the time. Perhaps the land was acquired after the return to Ohio.
1810-11 - this seems to be the most likely date for birth of daughter Nancy though censuses show a range from 1809 to 1814 with two indicating Ohio birth, two others KY birth.
1812 - son George born in Ohio, confirmed by two censuses though a third says KY and a fourth PA.
1812 - Hardesty's "Presidents, Statesmen and Soldiers" includes a George Delong who served under General Harrison, supporting the tradition that all seven of George Sr's sons served in the War of 1812.
1814 - son James was born in or near Zanesville.
1816 - brother Joseph was still in Ohio at birth of a son, presumably George still there also.
ca 1819 - returned to KY.
1820 - April census of Floyd Co. 400010/22010. The boys were George, James, Samuel and an unknown fourth. The older girls were Elizabeth and Sarah, the younger Nancy and an unknown. Agnes Auxier's letter (mentioned above under 1806) confirms the family's return to Ohio, says they went to KY for a second time in 1821 (obviously a late date) settling on John's Creek.
1821 - Granted power of attorney Nov 20 to brother Edward of Perry Co., OH re settlement of their father's lands.
1830 - Floyd Co. 10120001/1111101. George III and James were 15-19, Samuel was 10-15, the male age 0-5 was likely Nancy's son Harvey b. 1828. The female 20-29 was Sarah (Elizabeth was married and gone), Nancy was 15-19, the girl 10-14 would be the unknown girl 0-9 in 1820, the girl 5-9 yet another unknown and the girl 0-4 would be Frances M.
1837 - tax list of Floyd Co., KY.
1838-9 - moved to Lawrence Co., KY. Lawrence had been formed from Floyd in 1821. Since George was in Floyd Co., in 1830 and 1837, he obviously moved physically and did not arrive in Lawrence through land transfer to the new county.
1840 - Lawrence Co., KY, 10110001/001100001. Originally George was entered as 60-69, changed to 50-59. The correction instead should have been made for Polly. The male 15-19 would be Samuel though he turned 20 this April. The male 10-14 is perhaps Nancy's son Harvey b. 1828 though Nancy herself was not in the home. And the male 0-4 might be Nancy's son Emery b. 1837-8.
The girl 15-19 is the unidentified girl 5-9 in 1830. The girl 10-14 is Frances M.
1843 - George (Jr. or III?), James and Samuel appear on a list of Johnson Co., KY residents when it was formed from Floyd, Moran and Lawrence Cos.
1847 - Polly d. Jun 17. (Carla Nash adds d. Floyd Co., KY).
1849 - George d. Apr 28. (Another source has d. 1849 in Auxier, Floyd Co., KY, bur. Rockcastle Creek, Auxier) (unable to find cemetery in FAG, no Rockcastle Cem. found, there is a Rockcastle Co. in KY - /rwd)
List of children (tentative):
1. Elizabeth "Betsy" DeLong Gaines Wells b. 1807-08. 2. Sarah "Sally" DeLong McGinnis b. 1808-09. 3. (male) DeLong b. 1810-20. 4. Nancy DeLong b. abt 1811 (unmarried w/children). 5. George E. DeLong III b. 1812. 6. James A. DeLong b. 1814. 7. Martha DeLong b. 1816, d. 1820. 8. O. P. DeLong b. 1818, d. 1820. 9. Samuel Jefferson DeLong b. 1818. 10. Frances M. "Fanny" DeLong Brown b. 1826.
