George Gaines was born after 1784, in Sittingbourne Parish, Old Rappahannock (modern day Richmond) County, Virginia son of Bernard Gaines and Martha Taylor. George was named for his his maternal grandfather, George, Taylor, who wrote his Will on June 24, 1706, and it was proven August 7, 1706. George Taylor named Martha in his Will and her youngest son, George Gaines, his namesake. [1]

George married Elinore Brown and had:

  1. Bernard, m. Elizabeth Ward, d. 1753 in Cumberland Co., VA
  2. Margaret, m. John H. Pryor

George Gaines' Will dated 28 Apr 1726 was proved in Richmond Co., VA on 01 Jun 1726 (Will book 5, page 12) and mentioned his brother Daniel, his son Bernard, his daughter Margaret, and his wife Elinor(e). His son Bernard was not of age at the writing of the will. [2]
