About George Gish
Moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1784 or 1785.
George married Susanna Stover, Sister of his brother John's wife. He came to Va from Pa in 1792 and purchased land from William Fleming by deed dated April 9, 1793 on the waters of Glade Creek, on the great road from Richmond to Big Lick, next to land belonging to his brother David. He, along with others, left Roanoke, Va. in 1823 and went to Woodford Co, Illinois. Several of his sons and grandchildren went with him. They carved out a whole county, formed boundary lines, established themselves as officials of the county, etc. They founded the first church in the area, a Brethren Church called the Panther Creek Church. These people, being mostly from Roanoke Valley, called their county and county seat "Roanoke". His son, George Gish remained in Va. He first married Ruth Howell and after her death married Elizabeth Garman. They had large family and settled on a farm near Gish's mill (Vinton). They are buried in the family cem.
