George Griswold was born 23 April 1548 in Solihull Warwick England, and died 28 Aug 1615 in Wooten Wawen, Warwickshire, England.

Parents: not confirmed. As of February 2023, we show them as Roger Griswold of Kenilworth - not his brother Thomas.

Origins

From Genevieve Tylee Kiepura, "Griswold Ancestry in England," in The American Genealogist, 39:176, which shows the sons of George Griswold of Wooten Wawen, Warwickshire, England, to be (in order of birth):# Francis (presumed to have inherited the estate, and stayed in England); some say he was this Griswold-325|Francis Griswold who did emigrate.

1. Edward (b. 1607) - emigrated to Windsor, Connecticut
2. Matthew - emigrated to Windsor with his brother Edward
3. Thomas - stayed in England (?)

Testimony given 15 May 1684 by Edward Griswold, aged about 77, that he came to New England in 1639 [hence born ca. 1607], and by Matthew Griswold, aged about 64, to the same effect [hence born ca 1620]. : George Griswold, aged about 67, testified 9 May 1700 that in youth he lived with his father, Edward Griswold, in Kenilworth, Warwickshire,and had heard his father say that the house they lived in there belonged to Edward's brother Matthew, and he had seen a letter from Thomas Griswold of Kenilworth intimating that Thomas lived in said house... [proving that there was a third brother, Thomas]

On 19 Jan 1737/8, Capt. George Griswold, aged about 72, and Mr. JohnGriswold, aged about 69, sons of George Griwsold, both of Windsor, Conn., testified that their grandfather's name was Edward Griswold, thattheir great-greatfather was George Griswold who had three sons, the eldest named Edward, the second named Matthew and the third or youngestnamed Thomas, of whom the first two came to New England from "Killigsworth" in Warwickshire; also that said Edward's eldest son has always been reputed to be Francis Griswold.

1. John Greswold died in 1472 in Rowington, Warwickshire, England. He had two sons, John and Roger who died 1544 in Rowington.
2. Roger married Margaret ???; sons named in his will were Robert, William, John, and Richard..
3. William Griswold was born 1514 in Rowington and died 1570 in Warwickshire. He married Elizabeth ??? circa 1538. Children were Margaret, Isabel, Roger, Thomas and Mary
4. Roger Griswold was born 1545 in Warwichshire and died 1604 in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Only his wife's initial "R" is known. Sons were Roger, Thomas, and George born in 1574. George's son Edward was the first of the family to emigrate to the Colonies.
