Born about 1570, probably in Bawtry, Yorkshire, England, "a wealthy Catholic gentleman living near Bawtry or Harworth..." [1]
One entry for this person (greenwald-miller version) styles him as "17th Lord of Bawtry".
George Morton who married Catherine Boun is widely accepted as being the son of Anthony Morton, who, though he was the 2nd son of Robert Morton (d1575), became lord of the manor of Harworth (in the parish of Bawtry) because his elder brother died young without issue [2]
George Morton of Hardwick, gent and Catherine Bown, daur. of John B. of Nottingham, gent., to be married at Colne, dated 1591 [3]. Colne (Lancashire) is an unlikely location for this marriage as it is nowhere close to Nottingham, Hardwick (Derbyshire) or Bawtry (George's birthplace).
George being "of Hardwick" at the time of this marriage is possibly explained by a document dated 1582 that describes his father, Anthony, as being servant to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. The Earl was married to Elizabeth Talbot, otherwise known as the celebrated ‘Bess of Hardwick’ and one of their residences was Hardwick Hall. It is therefore quite possible that as a young man George had spent time as a member of that household.
Thoroton [4] in talking about Harworth in Bawtry has this to say about George's father Anthony:
This Town and Hamlets have been of long time the Inheritance of Moreton, an ancient and worshipful Family, until Anth. Moreton Esq (who paid in Queen Elizabeth's time 3s 4d for half a knight's fee in Harworth) wasted the Estate, he was the father of Robert Moreton who sold Harworth to Mr William Saunderson.
He further says (about the chapel at Bawtry) [5] :
The Moretons did found an Hospital in the uttermost edge of the Parish near Bawtrey Town in Yorkshire, to which there is also a Chapel yet standing, wherein they of the Family have used to be buried, and amongst the rest there lies Katherine (daughter of John Boun, Esquire, by his first wife, and so) half sister to Gilbert Boun, Sergeant at Law, who was the widow of George Moreton, elder brother of the beforenamed Robert, who sold Hareworth, which George died long before the said Anthony his father.
In the abscence of parish records and wills Robert Thoroton (published in 1677) is probably the best source of information on this family as Gilbert Boun mentioned above was Thoroton's father-in-law and collector of much of the information published in Thoroton's book.
