Mourt's Relation = a transcription of the work he edited.

George Morton (ca. 1585-1624) was an English Puritan Separatist, probably from Bawtry, South Yorkshire, England, and member of the Scrooby Congregation of separatists who eventually became the Mayflower Pilgrims. Morton, who had moved to Leyden, Holland with the congregation, stayed behind when the first settlers left for Plymouth, Massachusetts. He continued to orchestrate business affairs in Europe and London for their cause -- presumably arranging for the 1622 publication of Mourt's Relation . In 1623 Morton himself emigrated on the ship Anne to Plymouth Colony with his wife Juliana Carpenter and her sister, Alice Southworth, who was to become the second wife of Governor William Bradford.

George Morton died in June 1624, the year after he arrived in Plymouth. His widow Juliana then married Manasseh Kempton, who had also arrived in 1623 on the Anne. After Morton's death, Governor Bradford took a keen interest in helping to raise the Morton children.

George Morton was one of the founders of the colony of New Plymouth colony. He came to Plymouth in the ship "Anne" during the latter part of July, in the year 1623.

George Morton married Juliana Carpenter, daughter of Alexander Carpenter, in Leiden on July 23, 1612, and had five children. She married (2) Manasseh Kempton in Plymouth before May 22, 1627, and had no recorded children with this second husband. She died in Plymouth on February 19, 1664.

Children of George and Julian Morton (all born in Leiden, with the possible exception of Ephraim):

Nathaniel was born about 1613. He married (1) Lydia Cooper on December 25, 1635, in Plymouth and had eight children. He married (2) Anne (Prichard) Templar in Plymouth on April 29, 1674. He died in June 1685.

Patience was born about 1615. She married (1) John Faunce in Plymouth by 1633 and had eight children. She married (2) Thomas Whitney after June 9, 1660. She died in Plymouth on August 16, 1691.

John was born about 1617. He married Lettice _____ by 1649 and had nine children. He died in Middleboro in 1673.

Sarah was born about 1620. She married Georg Bonham on December 20, 1644, in Plymouth and had four children. She died in Plymouth in 1694.

Ephraim was born by 1623. He married Ann Cooper on November 18, 1644, in Plymouth and had nine children. He died in 1693.

Immigration: 10 JUL 1623 Pilgrim Ship the "Anne"

Occupation: merchant.

George was among the Separatists of Leyden, Holland. George and Juliana came in the Ann in 1623 with their children Nathaniel, John, Ephraim, Patience, and Sarah.

"George Morton was one of the founders of the colony of New Plymouth in Massachusetts, having been of that company of Puritans who left England in the early part of the seventeenth century, found a brief asylum in Holland, and came to America to establish a Christian state."

GEORGE MORTON ORIGIN: Leiden MIGRATION: 1623 in Anne

OCCUPATION: Merchant. ESTATE: In the 1623 Plymouth land division George Morton was paired with Experience Mitchell, as passengers in the Anne, in a grant of eight acres [PCR 12:6]. By the time of the 1627 Plymouth cattle division, George Morton's widow, Juliana, had married Manasseh Kempton, and she and four of her children, Nathaniel, John, Ephraim and Patience Morton, were included in the company of William Bradford [PCR 12:13]. A fifth child, Sarah Morton, was the eleventh person in the company of Francis Eaton [PCR 12:12].
George Morton received one share in the Dartmouth lands [MD 4:187]; as he was long dead when this division was made, the grant was presumably to his heirs.
BIRTH: By about 1587 based on date of marriage.
DEATH: Plymouth June 1624 [Prince 310]
MARRIAGE: Leiden 22 July 1612 [NS] Juliana Carpenter, daughter of Alexander Carpenter [MD 11:193].
She married (2) by 1627 MANASSEH KEMPTON and died at Plymouth 19 February 1664 aged fourscore and one year [PCR 8:25].

 5. EPHRAIM, by 1623; m. Plymouth 18 November 1644 Ann Cooper [PCR 2:79].

ASSOCIATIONS

Through his marriage to Juliana Carpenter, George Morton was brother-in-law to SAMUEL FULLER, WILLIAM BRADFORD and WILLIAM WRIGHT, and was uncle to CONSTANT SOUTHWORTH and EDWARD SOUTHWORTH (see PRISCILLA CARPENTER).

In 1957 John G. Hunt published a speculative piece suggesting a distant collateral connection between WILLIAM BRADFORD and George Morton [NEHGR 111:68].

COMMENTS

George Morton's son Nathaniel wrote a history of Plymouth Colony called New England's Memorial and says about the Anne:

Two of the principal passengers that came in this ship were Mr. Timothy Hatherly and Mr. George Morton.... The latter of the two forenamed, namely Mr. George Morton, was a pious, gracious, servant of God, and very faithful in whatsoever public employment he was betrusted withal, and an unfeigned well willer, and according to his sphere and condition, a suitable promoter of the common good and growth of the plantation of New Plimouth; laboring to still the discontents that sometimes would arise amongst some spirits by reason of the difficulties of these new beginnings but it pleased God to put a period to his days soon after his arrival in New England, not surviving a full year after his coming ashore. With much comfort and peace he fell asleep in the Lord, in the month of June, anno 1624 [Morton 63-64]
