George Washington Place (1889-1958).

He was a dairy farmer (1921, 1940) and mail carrier. He moved from Michigan to Davenport, Iowa in 1912. He married there in 1914, and moved across the Mississippi River from Davenport to Rock Island, Illinois. The 1921 City Directory shows their address as 4618 12th Street. In 1923 they went to live with his wife's parents at 3100 24th Street. George took over his father-in-law's dairy business, running it as as Place Dairy until 1949. The 1940 City Directory shows their address once again as 4618 12th Street. He then worked as star route mail carrier in lower Rock Island County and Mercer County, retiring in 1956. He died at home (3100 24th Street, Rock Island) in 1958 of lung cancer after a one year illness. Funeral services were held at Bethel Assembly of God. He was an Episcopalian and a Democrat. There are photos of him at Illinois State Historical Library, donated by Justin C. S. Howery.

He is said to have been a Freemason but the card file of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Illinois, which begins in 1920, does not show George W. Place as a Mason.
