About Carroll Arthur Place
Carroll Arthur "Curly" Place died in Grand Junction, Colorado on June 11, 2000 after an illness of several years. He was born March 29, 1920 in Rock Island, Illinois, son of George W. and Dorothy (Gottsch) Place. He grew up in Rock Island, where his parents owned Place Dairy.
Carroll came to Grand Junction in 1968 when he retired as an aerospace engineer for PG&G at the Nevada Test Site north of Las Vegas. He had previously worked for Boeing Aerospace in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Morton Thiokol in Brigham City, Utah.
In Grand Junction he first owned Curly's Enco at the corner of 5th and Grand, and later Monument Automotive. In recent years he worked as a superintendent for Green Tree Construction.
Carroll was a member of the American Lutheran Church, and a past member of Mesa County Sheriff's Posse, Grand Junction Masonic Lodge #173, and El Jebel Shriners. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and auto mechanics. He had a particular passion for Volkswagens, Porsches, and Karmann Ghias.
He is survived by his companion Donna Gaylor; three children, Justin C.S. Howery, of Denver; Mrs. Danny T. Carlson (Evonne), of American Fork, Utah; Mrs. Richard T. Tangren (Linda), of Provo, Utah; and a brother August G. Place, of Dallas, Texas.
