A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA with the rank of CAPTAIN. DAR Ancestor # A098354

Lydia's brother George Russell, husband of Elizabeth Bean, was killed by Indians while on a hunting trip in Grainger County, Tennessee, in 1796. Her daughter, Jane Bean, was killed in 1798 by Indians while working her loom outside the walls of Bean's Station.

ELIZABETH5 BEAN (WILLIAM4, JOHN (MACBEAN)3, WILLIAM 22, WILLIAM 11)11 was born 1723, and died January 1800 in German Creek, Granger Co., TN11. She married GEORGE RUSSELL. He was born 1720, and died May 10, 1797 in Grainger Co., TN

His grandson, (son of Major William Russell) also named George Russell, was a friend of Davey Crockett and portrayed by Buddy Ebsen in the Disney shows of the 1950s.

My fourth great grandfather, thru his daughter Elizabeth who married John Horner.

Bent Creek Cemetery is the traditionally recorded burial place for George Russell. He was a charter member of this church. If someone can confirm his burial with an official record or photograph, many Russell researchers and descendants would be very appreciative.

His parents are unknown. They may have been William Russell and Martha Henley listed below. This family is challenging due to the heavy use of William and George.

Biography == Captain George Russell was born circa 1720 in what is now Loudoun County, Virginia, the son of William Russell. George survived the Battle of Kings Mountain October 7, 1780, in what was then rural Cherokee County, South Carolina. It was a decisive victory in South Carolina for the Patriot militia over the Loyalist militia in the Southern campaignof the American Revolutionary War. The battle took place nine miles south of the present-day town of Kings Mountain, now in North Carolina.

Captain Russell married in Pittsylvania, Virginia, Elizabeth "Eliza" Bean, daughter of William and Margaret Bean of Northumberland County, Virginia. In 1769, George and Elizabeth/Eliza migrated with Eliza's brother, Captain William Bean and his wife Lydia Russell, to the WataugaSettlement in Tennessee.
Captain George Russell established the community of Russellville in 1785. He had been granted a large tract of land in Greene Co, North Carolina. The location of the land became part of Grainger County, Tennessee, and later Hamblen County, Tennessee. Located along U.S. Route 11E, it lies approximately midway between Whitesburg and Morristown. During the American Civil War, Lieutenant General James Longstreet established a headquarters in the Nenney House just after the Battle of Bean's Station. The house still stands and has been converted into The Longstreet Museum. <ref> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russellville,_Tennessee </ref> George and Eliza lived on German Creek, in Grainger County, Tennessee,where In the fall of 1796, he was killed by Indians in a raid and left in the woods. The male body that is presumed to have been his was found and buried in the cemetery of Bent Creek Baptist Church.
