About George Nicholas Sanders
Civil War Confederate Operative. His political career began when he organized a meeting in 1843 to call on candidates for President to give their views on acquiring Texas, which helped bring then unknown James K. Polk's name into national prominence. He later served as Consul to London, England, but his favorable views towards European revolutions got him quickly recalled. His activities as a Confederate agent in Canada are shrouded in mystery and he was suspected of much mischief at the time. When President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, his involvement was suspected. Rewards were offered for Sanders' capture and he was forced to flee to Europe. He was later allowed to quietly return to the United States, but died in 1873. He is buried in an unmarked grave in a plot where the American flag constantly flies over the grave of his father-in-law, Samuel Reid, one of the designers of the flag.
