About George Washington Shields
George Washington Shields was injured/crippled in the Civil War.
George never married. He acquired 240 acres in Cades Cove by a state land grant in 1856. The acreage was in Chestnut Flats, and was sold to Wilson Burchfield in 1873. George bought a farm in Murray Co., GA., where he was listed in the census records of 1860 through 1900, when he was living alone.
In 1860, his mother and sister Matilda were living with him.
