About George Washington Riddle
Age: 87 years, 09 months and 08 days. At his death he was the Commandant of Soldiers at the, Oregon Soldier's Home in Roseburg, Oregon. This is where he died about 11:45 A M.
Judge, George W. Riddle wrote, 'History of the Early Days in Oregon' and then had it published in Riddle, Oregon in 1920 it was reprinted, constructed from a series of sketches that he wrote.
"During the Civil War, I was a soldier, a member of, Company C, First Oregon Calvary....During the summer of 1861 our company in passing through the Willamette Valley, encamped on Mary's River, near Corvallis." There George met the remnant squaws and a few children of the Cow Creek Indians that had once lived as neighbors in Douglas County. Only the Cow tribe had lost the war with the white men. Their adult men had all died rather than go to the reservation where now their wives now lived. One fell on her knees and begged George W. Riddle to let them go home. They saw him in uniform and hoped he had the power to free them to return to Cow Valley. He spoke to them in their native tongue, he had learned as a child. He knew some of the Cow Indian women. He wanted to help them and could not. He never saw them again. Their people had been friendly and helpful to his pioneering family.
The quoted sentences were from George's book, "History of Early Days in Oregon". Reprinted from material first published in, The Riddle Enterprise - newspaper, 1920.
