About Gerhard Hendricks

The Gerrit HENDRICKS' house, built in 1687, ... was in Lot 8, Germantown Division, east side of Germantown Road, along the east side of Wingochocking Creek, between Lukens Mill Road-Church Lane and Weavers Mill Road-Shoemakers Lane-Penn St. Nearby was the house of son-in-law Isaac Shumacker (1669-1732) and his wife Sarah (1678-1742).

Lambert HENDRICKS, son of Gerrit HENDRICKS, appears in the Germantown court records in 1694 for grievances against Peter Schumacker, Jr.

It is supposed that Gerrit HENDRICKS was born in Germany about 1654 and died in Germantown about 1691.

In about 1669 Gerhard married Dutch-born, Sytje Bonetkoe Boekenoogen, and they had a son, Wilhelm (aka Willem), born in 1670 in Kresheim. They also had a daughter Sarah and a son Leendert (Lambert). Gerrit/Gerhard was a Quaker convert along with Peter Schumacher. They were persecuted in Kriesheim due to their refusal to take oaths and to pay taxes or tithes to the state. Eventually, Gerhard, Peter Schumacher and Arnold Cassel applied to emigrate to Holland (and later to Pennsylvania) to escape the situation they found themselves in. A visit from Francis Daniel Pastorious in 1683 may have prompted their exit. [1] In 1685 the family emigrated with the Schumacher family via London to Philadelphia, moving to Germantown.

Little is known of Mary/Sytje Boekenoogen Hendricks except that she was Dutch and her parents were from Haarlem, Holland, in the Netherlands. She married a Dutch / German man - Gerhard / Gerritt Hendricks - and they lived in the Palatinate Rhineland in western Germany, in an area where there were many Dutch possessions under the House of Orange at that time. Both Dutch and German were spoken and families inter-married.

Mary/Maria emigrated with her family from Germany to London to Pennsylvania in 1685 and it can be assumed she shared their Mennonite and then Quaker beliefs. As her first son Willem was born in about 1670 in Germany, she must have been born ca. 1656. Her parents are said to have married in 1655. It is possible that her death date of 1740 is also mistaken as other sources say that Gerhard Hendricks re-married in Philadelphia to a Mary Sophia Johnson (an English surname - possibly a Quaker) after arrival there in 1685. It is possible that the death dates for Mary and Gerhard were transposed (so she died in 1691 and he died in March 1740).

notes

From Lil Miller's web Page, www.erols.com/misslil/genlist, it is known that Gerrit married first Marya, second Sytje Boekenoogen. Came from Germany and settled in Germantown as a Quaker. He then turned Mennonite.

"I'm aware that most sources, including Davis' History of Bucks Co, state that Willem/William Hendricks was a son of Gerhard/Gerhart Hendricks and arrived with him at Philadelphia aboard the “Frances and Dorothy” on 12 Oct 1685, but research documentation reported by Dennis M. Hendricks (dr agonmaster49@live.com) shows that Willem/Wilhelm/Willam Hendricks arrived in Philadelphia in 1689 with sons Hendrick and Lourentz (Paulus, Lenhar dt and Pietre were born in Germantown) and that manifest of the ship Franc es and Dorothy's 1685 voyage shows only Gerhardt, his wife Maria, their daughter Sarah with the name Hendricks, along with Heinrich Frey, Peter Schoemacher, etc. Further, that Gerhart Hendricks had only one child, Sarah, wife of Isaac Schumacher/Shoemaker, and she was the sole heir of his estate after his wife Maria died."

Do not confuse with Gerritt Hendricks DeWeese. They are two different people.
