John G GARRETSON-, 1642 - 1695

John G GARRETSON- was born on month day 1642, to Garrit Jansen VANVORST- and Gertrude (Geertury) JACOBS VANVORST- (born GARRETSON-). Garrit was born in 1618, in Corlears Hook, New Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands. Gertrude was born in 1618, in Holland, Reusel-de Mierden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. John had 6 brothers: Henry GARRETSON-, Jacobus Gerritse GARRETSON VANVORST- and 4 other siblings. John married Ann THAYER GARRETSON- in 1673, at age 30 at marriage place, Delaware. Ann was born in 1654, in New Castle, New Castle, Delaware, United States. They had 3 children: Garrett GARRETSON- and 2 other children. John married Anna GLINN GARRETSON- in 1659, at age 16 at marriage place, Delaware. Anna was born in 1640, in New Castle, New Castle, Delaware, United States. They had one son: Henry GARRETSON-. John lived at address. John passed away on month day 1695, at age 52 at death place, Delaware.

If these are your ancestors, according to the late Garrison genealogist Sam Garrison, you are in his line........Quoting this information from his book, Garretson to Garrison Revised 2002: Garrett who married Mary Baudwin / Baldwin was the son of Hendrik Garretson and grandson of the original Hendrik Gerritsen who arrived in 1662 in New Amstel, Delaware, with his mother Lysbeth Hendriksx [ship log says Lysbet Hendriksen... BKT] (daughter of Hendrik and Dutch women kept their maiden name even after marriage) on the ship D'Vos which set sail in Holland.....the manifest was dated August 31, 1662. There was another son, brother to Hendrik, Pol/Pal/Paul/Powell Gerritsen..and he is my ancestor, we believe.

The boys' father was not in the picture when she arrived. There was an older Gerritsen boy, Jan who is likely the older brother of Paul and Hendrik. If he is, then their father would be Gerrit Jansen. We know that because Paul and Hendrik in the patronymic naming of the Dutch are Gerristen...sons of Gerrit. So therefore the father would be Gerrit. And if Jan is the oldest.he would be named for Gerrit's father..so Gerrit would be Gerrit Jansen (son of Jan). The thought is that he and their son Jan came over before Lysbeth and the little ones came and was dead by the time she arrived. She later married Swart Jacob Jansen and Sam thought likely he was her brother in law.

Actually, according to Sam, Garret (who was born in 1691) was married twice. First, when he was 33 years old, to Elisabeth Erickson, daughter of Erik and Anna Erikson. Anna's mother was Catherine Derikson who was neighbor. Sam's birth, death and marriage information came from the Holy Trinity Church Records or New Castle Records, Deeds and Wills, according to Sam's footnotes.

Their children were Catherine, born and died in 1725;

Then an unnamed child, buried in 1726; Third, John Garretson, born Feb 20, 1728. Fourth, Anna Garetson, born May 16, 1731 And fifth, Maria Garretson, born and died in 1734.

Elizabeth died and Sam thought perhaps in childbirth.

Then Garret married Mary Baldwin/Baudwin on May 13, 1735. Her father was John Baldwin of New Castle. And their chidren were :

"Rebecca Garretson, b. April 9, 1736; Henry Garretson, b. ca 1738; George Garretson, b. ca. 1740 (and I see that you have Mar. 1739...so Sam was close) Garret Garretson, b. Nov. 8, 1743; Eleanor Garretson, b. ca. 1748; Jacob Garretson, b. Feb. 12, 1751 Garret died by 1751 and his will was dated January 21, 1755 and probated in 1757." as per NC Wills, Misc. Book 1, p.130.

John Garretson from Garret and his first wife, Elisabeth Erikson, was Sam's ancestor.

I held onto your email when I read it because I thought this was Sam's line. I am putting together a family tree for my brother's DNA which he has sent to the Garrisson DNA Project to test using Paul as our ancestor. Any chance you have any direct male Garrisons from your line who might want to do theirs? I held off asking my brother cuz I didn't think he'd want to..and he jumped on it! Thought it was way cool! So when I just now ran into Garret and Mary's info I double checked and voila!

John Sobieski John M ZABRISKIE king of Poland 1674 96 was one of the greatest warriors of the seventeenth century His father James Sobieski castillion of Cracow was a man of virtuous character and in behalf of his fellow countrymen he developed a warlike spirit which secured to him the throne of Poland He brought up his sons Mark and John born between 1624 and 1629 with the utmost care and they completed their education by travel and observation in France England Germany and Italy On the death of their father in 1648 they were recalled home and after the defeat of the Polish army by the Russians in the battle of Pilawieez the brothers Sobieski took up arms to restore the fortunes of their countrymen and Mark fell in battle on the banks of the Bog This spurred John to greater valor and he became the admiration of the Poles and the dread of the Tartans and Cossacks He received the highest military rank in the army and November 11 1673 in the great battle of Choezim he defeated the Turks who left twenty eight thousand men dead and wounded on the battle field This led to his unanimous election of king of Poland May 21 1674 and he was crowned at Cracow In 1683 the Turks besieged Vienna and King John III with twenty thousand Poles aided by the German auxiliaries raised the siege by the victory of September 12 1683 in which battle he took the banner of Mohammed and sent it as a trophy to the pope His entry into Vienna was that of a conqueror and the citizens of the besieged city showed every demonstration of joy and thanksgiving their ingenuity could devise or their glad hearts express John Sobieski was not only a warrior and ruler but a lover of science and a man of gentle disposition and agreeable manner His constant wars did not allow him however to attend to the industrial needs of the citizens at home and the want of such fostering care hastened the downfall of Poland He died of apoplexy June 17 1696 His ancestors had been for two centuries Palatine nobles of Poland and famous soldiers and statesmen It is from such ancestors with such records of military and executive greatness that the Za briskies of New Jersey and New York are descended and the cognomen has through the German Holland and English spellings evolved James Sobieski and cousin of King John m of Poland who like his nephew was a famous soldier was born inZolkwa Poland orEnghs burg Prussia probably in 1638 He was given a liberal education being sent by his father to Amsterdam Holland with the hope that he would enter the ministry and he directed his studies to that end for a time but the preparation proved distasteful and he abandoned theology subsequently he was pressed into the Prussian army To fight for the old enemy of Poland was far more distasteful and he determined to seek his fortune in the new world and join his friends who had gone from the Upper Palatinate to New Amsterdam and made homes there and in New Jersey He took passage in the Dutch ship D Vos the Fox Captain Jacob Jansz Huys at Amsterdam Holland August 31 1662 and landed in New Amsterdam where he lived for ten or more years without settling in any one place or engaging in any settled business We find him in Bergen now Jersey City about the time of his marriage which is registered in the books of the Dutch Reformed Church of Bergen December 17 1676 and the marriage certificate recorded as issued January 8 1677 He married Machtelt Matilda daughter of Joost Van der Linde whose brother Roloff Van der Linde became one of the largest landholders in Bergen Upon his marriage he took title to a tract of land patent 20 21 22 In 1682 he obtained patents from Lady Cartaret of several adjacent tracts thus extending his estate from the Hudson river on the east to the Hackensack river on the west The Indians also bargained with him for land at Tappan higher up the river which in 1702 he nominally exchanged for twenty one hundred acres owned by the Indians adjoining his original purchases and this second purchase became known as the New Paramus Patent See map of Perth Amboy He erected a house at Old Acken sack now near Ridgefield Park and his eldest sons Jacob and Jan John and probably all his children were born there He helped to organize the church on the green at Old Hackensack in 1696 his name appearing on stone in present church wall and was the leading member and supporter of that church for Various names in this family show variations of form appearing differently in different branches of the family and are so preserved in these narrat1ves over twenty five years He was also the first justice of the peace of Upper Bergen county his original signature appearing on deed held by Wesley Van Emburgh of Ridgewood New Jersey his commission having been signed by Governor Hamilton in 1682 He died in Hack ensack and is supposed to have been buried there September 11 1711 according to the record of the Lutheran churches in and about New York and his age is stated as between seventy two and seventy three years His widow born in 1656 died in 1725 In the record of his death his name is written Albert Saboriski Children of Albert and Matilda Van der Linde Saboriski born in or near Hack ensack Bergen county New Jersey 1 Jacob A April 12 1679 see sketch 2 Jan John born in Hackensack about 1682 married September 20 1706 Elizabeth Cloes Romeyn of jravesend Long Island New York born 1683 died in Hackensack in 1712 he married second December 6 1712 Marguaretta du Rij Durie and lived on the old homestead facing the green alongside the church in Hackensack which he inherited and besides being a farmer he was active in public affairs he had four children by his first wife and nine by his second 3 Yost George see sketch 4 Christian see sketch 5 Hendrick see forward There is a tradition in the family that Jacob A eldest son of Albert was stolen by the Indian sachem when seven years old and carried to the Indian village nearby and that some time elapsed before his whereabouts became known As his father was a true friend of the Indians the sachem at last disclosed the secret of taking the child and he expressed the wish that he be allowed to keep the boy until he had become versed in the Indian language that he might be able to maintain the friendship established by the father and like him act as an arbitrator and interpreter in any trouble that might come up between the Indians and their white neighbors The father consented and when he had returned to his father's home he had acquired the language and his friendship for the Indians was a fixed principle of his life The tradition adds that in consideration of allowing the boy to remain the second grant of Upper Paramus was secured The fact however remained that valuable merchandise wampum and money was paid the Indians by Albert Saboriski for the land II Hendrick Zabriskie youngest child of Albert and Matilda Van der Linde Saboriski was born History of New Netherland, Vol. 1, Callaghan, pp263-4: "An Englishman, residing on Staten Island, in the service of De Vries was killed shortly after; and in a few days following, Gerrit Jansen van Vorst was also slain, while engaged roofing a house "behind the cul", as Newark Bay was called, in the colonie of the Lord of Nederhorst". [Book III, 1642]

Documentary History of New York, Vol. IV, pg.150: An Indian having been intoxicated with brandy by our men, being asked whether he was able to make good use of his bow & arrow when in that state, pointed his arrow at a certain man called Gerrit Yansz, a servant of the deceased Mr. van Nederhorsts, whom he actually killed...

Van Vorst Papers, Schenectady Library: It was sometime during the year 1642 that Gerrit Janszen Van Vorst entered history in his own right. He was up on a roof in the New Jersey settlement of Achter Col, doing a thatching job. Nearby some of his neighbors were busy getting a Hackensack Indian thoroughly drunk. Next they began teasing him, telling him he was too drunk to be able to shoot straight. Rising to the dare, he aimed at the handiest target: Gerrit Janszen, perched up against the sky. Despite the load of brandy taken aboard, the Indian's aim was sure. The arrow killed Gerrit. This bit of tragic horseplay almost precipitated a war with the local Indians, & the story is retold, in several fragmentary versions, in a series of complaints sent back to Holland formally denouncing the laxness of the current New Netherlands government. Gertrude, the widow Van Vorst, soon remarried. But our chief concern is with the two fatherless boys--one, Jacobus very probably an infant in arms. ~• source: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cdn-kemp&id=I5740''
