Gershom Gard, born in New Jersey in 1734, was a soldier in the war, belonging to the classified militia. He came to this Country among the earliest pioneers and settled in Springfield Township on the North Bend Road about 1 mile west of the Cincinnati and Hamilton turnpike, where he died in 1805 (sic), and was buried in a lot on his own farm which he set apart for a burial ground and is known at the: Gard Graveyard", now a briar patch. It contains more than 200 graves, some of which contain the dust of men prominent in their generation. There is a plain stone at the grave of Mr. Gard, giving the date of his death and age. Phoebe, his wife, who died in 1812, in her 81st year is buried beside him. Capt. Brown of the War of 1812, married a daughter of Gard, who lived and died in old age on the same farm in Springfield Township. Her descendents in the second and third generations are numerous. Ref: "Guardian" Vol. VII, No. 3 &4. ---------------- Tombstone reads "Gershom Gard", died15 January 1807. ---------------- Gershom Gard came west from New Jersey with his son, Daniel and his cousin Alexander (Guard), settling first in North Bend, Ohio. In 1795 with a Miami land warrant and $200., Gershom purchased adjoining Sections 31 and 25. This land totaled 1.289 acres and extended from (today) North Bend Road to Galbraith Road, and Daly Road to the Colerain Township line. He settled in Springfield Township upon North Bend Road, about one mile west of Hamilton Ave. Gershom Gard was a veteran of the American Revolution and served as a private in Capt. Keen's Company. Peter Keen got the forfeit of Section 31. Gershom later sold to his son, Seth, the land in Section 25, approximately 640 acres for $640. When Gershom died in 1807, he was buried on his farm in an area he set aside for a family cemetery. This area was later called the McCrea Cemetery because the McCreas owned the surrounding property, although the cemetery was no longer being used by that time and no McCreas were buried there. Gershom married Phebe Huntington also of New Jersey. They had nine children; Job, married Elizabeth Magee, Seth, m Mary Brown, Elizabeth, married Aaron Waggoner, Ruth, married Peter Perring Lee, Betsy "Tibba" married Robert Whalen, Jemima, m.Peter Keen, Eunice m Capt. Ephraim Brown, Hannah m Squire Gibb, and Daniel. Seth and his wife went to Wabash Co., Illinois in 1814 and founded Old Palmyra along with Peter Keen, Gervase Hazelton, Levi Compton and John Waggoner. He became a minister and a judge. He served in the War of 1812 with Capt. John Wallace's Hamilton Co., Mounted Militia. Ref: Guardian Newsletter, Vol VII, No 3 & 4. Event: Biography Note:

Judge John Cleves Symmes, of New Jersey, was the purchaser of a large tract of land between teh great and little Miami rivers, bordering on the Ohio river. On Judge Symmes' second tour west, in the spring of 1790, among other families accompanying him from New Jersey, were 3 families by the name of Guard, to-wit: Alexander Guard, Gersham Guard and ________ Guard, cousins.
Recently, I came across an index of Early Ohio Newspapers. In the (Cincinnati?) Spy Extra of 5 NOV 1803 there is supposed to be an accoutn of James Smith, Sheriff of Hamilton Co., Ohio regarding the suit of Gershom Gard vs. Judge John Cleeves Symmes. Does anyone know the nature or outcome of this suit?
most lawsuits involving john symmes would involve the "symmes purchase".... symmes acquired a large block of land much of which was in the dayton, ohio area.... he somehow defaulted on payments and land was to revert back to the government... local citizens stepped in and "rescued" much of the land, but think owners in many cases had to pay for it all over again....
"The Hayes Family" by Royal S. Hayes p 193 of the second addition with addendum. It continues, "Alexander and his with Mary Guard, and their four children settled at North Bend, and Gersham Guard and family, and his brother settled some five miles east near what is now Delhi." Alexander is buried in the Miller Cemetary just off RT 50 in Indiana west of Stateline Rd. His wife Hannah (Not Mary) is buried in the Guard Cemetary, west side of Whispering Woods Drive, Lawrenceburg TWP Indiana. I believe that Alexander Guard/Gard and Gershom/Gersham Gard/Guard were born in Morristown, NJ.
