"GERSHOM HOBART [II. 335], son of Rev. Peter Hobart, was born in

Hingham, December, 1645. He was graduated at Harvard College in 1667, in the
same class with his brothers Japhet and Nehemiah. After graduation he lived for
awhile in Hingham. "Hobart
accompanied, or soon followed, the settlers who, after the destruction of Groton
by the Indians in 1676, returned in the spring of 1678," and he was ordained
minister there Nov. 26, 1679, as successor to Rev. Samuel Willard. His ministry
was not
harmonious. About the year 1689 he appears to have left the town, the
dissensions having become so great. Although calls had been made to others, he
was, in 1690, and again in 1693, asked to return, and he did so before 1694.
When the Indians attacked
Groton in 1694, Mr. Hobart was preserved from falling into their hands, although
they took two of his children, killing one of them. He preached in Groton until
1705, and resided there till his death, Dec. 19, 1707."

GERSHOM*14 HOBART, REV. (PETER*13, EDMUND*12, THOMAS*11, THOMAS* "THE MARTYR"10, MILES*9, JAMES*8, THOMAS*7, WILLIAM*6, THOMAS*5, JOHN*4, GODFREY*3, JOHN*2, JOHN*1HOBART/HUBBARD) was born December 1645 in Hingham, Plymouth, MA, and died December 18, 1707 in Groton, Middlesex, MA. He married SARAH* ALDIS April 26, 1675 in Dedham, Maine. Notes for GERSHOM* HOBART III, REV.: He was admitted freeman October 8, 1662, and was the third of this direct line in America and Peter's 11th child (7th by his second marriage) graduated from Harvard College in 1667. He preached a short time in Plymouth and other places and was ordained at Groton, MA, November 26, 1679, where he remained until his death in 1707, and was a famous and popular divine. Taken from 'Genealogical and Family History of the State of NH', compiled under editorial supervision of Ezra S. Stearns. Groton was virtually wiped out in King Phillip's War. It was attacked by the Indians on March 2, 1676. Sporadic fighting continued until March 13th, when the last surviving inhabitants evacuated the town and fought their way to safety. The Indians then burned most of the remaining buildings. Many of those who escaped sought refuge in Concord, MA, where they remained until the end of the war. In 1678 they returned to Groton. The Reverend Gershom Hobart either accompanied them or soon joined them as their pastor. The earliest known town record inscribed after the resettlement was written by him regarding a town meeting held in June, 1678. Groton survived through Queen Anne's War and Lovewell's War. From the outbreak of King William's War until "Lovewell's Fight," which brought peace and security, was a period of thirty-seven years: twenty-three of warfare and danger, and fourteen of uncertain peace. Groton suffered another raid by Indians in King William's War. The attack came on June 27,1694. History records that the Reverend Gershom Hobart and most of his family made a "miraculous escape," but two of his children were captured, and one of them (Nehemiah age 7) later killed. The other, Gershom, Jr., was held captive by the tribal chief. He was well treated by the chief and his wife and was eventually ransomed.

His brother, Gershom, was captured by an Indian Nassacombwit chief but was returned to his home a year later (some records say 4 years) after ransom was paid. Usually Indians used children as trade for goods, unless they could not keep up with the prisoner marches. At eight years of age it is probable that he could not keep up with the march and they were only keeping women and girls.
