Photo above given to Meg Young in 1977 by Mary Rae, Gertrude Craig's niece.
Will - Wilson and Simms Solicitors Strabane, death date November 30, 1947; probate June 29, 1948; executrix Kathleen Homan, at Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, Belfast
Buried in the Craig plot at St. Patrick's Churchyard, Lower Donoughmore, Co. Donegal.
Born in 1861 in Grahamstown, South Africa, to Frederic Calder Bate, co-owner of the mercantile company Greathead and Bate and his wife Rosa Isabella Wright, youngest daughter of 1820 settlers William and Rosa Wright. In the depression of 1870, Bate lost everything -- his business and his home "Mayfield." The family moved to Queenstown where he became manager of the Oriental Bank Ltd. About 1880 Gertrude Bate met her husband, John Frederick Craig, an Irish civil engineer who was working on the Cape-to-Cairo railroad project and had moved to Queenstown. They had five children. According to her father Frederic Calder Bate's death notice, she and her husband were living in East London in 1903. At some point, probably in 1912, she moved from South Africa to Killygordon, Co. Donegal to the Craig family home Finnview, when her husband retired. After his death in January 1923, she lived with her son-in-law Rev. Cyril Homan and her daughter Kathleen Homan in the Rectory in Raphoe, Co. Donegal. Both her grandsons Peter Homan and Philip Homan remember her as a kind and loving grandmother. She was a lovely lady.
