About John Frederick "Jack" Craig
Information extracted from "Cape Times, 1938" Educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown, and Rhodes University; took his civil engineering training and degree of AMICE at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
1909- as a qualified harbour engineer, joined the Natal Government Railways, working on survey and construction; 1912 - Cape Town, assistant engineer on the open lines; 1913-16 - interruption for service in WWI, invalided out in 1917; 1917 - Kimberly, district engineer; 1918 - East London, district engineer; 1920 - Harbour Engineer at East London, where he designed many improvements to the Buffalo Harbour, including the Turning Basin; 1929- Harbour Engineer of Port Elizabeth - determined that the floor of the bay was not solid rock but sandstone, reducing the cost of the dock construction scheme from 12,000,000 pounds to 3,000,000 pounds. "For his excellent work at East London and Port Elizabeth, Mr. Craig was in 1932 appointed Harbour Engineer at Cape Town, and two years later Harbour Advisory Engineer of the Union." Created the vast development plan for Table Bay harbour.
John Craig married Ella Munn at St. John's Church, East London, 28 February 1913.
Held rank of Brigadier General in WWII.
He was a prominent Civil Engineer and was Harbour Engineer of East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. There is a road named after him in Cape Town, Jack Craig Street, and a hall on Robben Island where he commanded a defense unit during WW2. He was heavily involved in the Cape Town Foreshore Reclamation Scheme as well as Head of Coastal Defence for SA during WW2.
