Gideona "Ona" Hugo (1937 - 2018)

Brief overview:

Ona (80), was attacked on Thursday night/Friday morning 25/26th January 2018 at Jongensfontein, near Stillbaai. Neighbours arrived on to the scene on Friday morning and contacted the police. The 80-year-old woman was found deceased in one of the rooms, as well as her 88-year-old friend, who was injured.

The suspects gained access to the house through a bathroom window which they forced open.
According to police Hugo was strangled to death.

  • The suspects were arrested near the small town Vermaaklikheid on Friday, two hours after the body of Ona Hugo was found in her home.

  • Judge Derick Wille found Steyn and van Rooy guilty on 26 June 2019 of the murder of Gideona "Ona" Hugo and attempted murder of Hester de Wit on 26 January 2018.

    • As far as the two women are concerned, the sentences are as follows: Both men are sentenced to 15 years for housebreaking with intent to rob and aggravated robbery, 10 years for attempted murder and life (25 years) for murder. These three sentences will be served concurrently. In relation to the five homeless men who terrorized them on January 25 on Stilbaai, they are sentenced to three times 15 years for aggravated robbery - these three sentences will be served concurrently. In two more sentences related to the homeless, they were sentenced to 10 years for attempted murder and five years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. These two sentences will not be served concurrently with the previous sentences. This means that they will serve for life plus 30 years, so a total of 55 years..
