: Gisa and Salek were living with us. And, and, uh, and Mama made a dinner. Yes. That was my birthday in nineteen twenty, uh, that was in ‘20, in 1929 already, you know, we met in ‘25. And that was in ‘29 be, uh, so Salek started to say, uh . . . .

SC: So then after you got engaged, then Salek and . . . ?

MC: They decided they have to leave in, in, in February. They came for two months, [SC: Mm-hmm.] for three months. And they said it would be lovely if you could get married and we could attend your marriage. [SC: Mm-hmm.] Meanwhile, within the next few days happened that crash, that, uh, Börsenkrach in ‘29, October 29th, I think it was, two days after they came [SC: You’re right.] and things were much different looking because they were very rich at that time, they had a lot of stocks put into their bank vault, [SC: Mm-hmm.] and nobody could go to that bank vault. That’s, they lost everything they had because they couldn’t go back so fast and, and save it. [SC: Mm-hmm.] As a matter of fact she is still owing me her birth, my wedding present.

SC: Gisa? [Laughs] I guess you are not going to get it in this life.

MC: No, no. But she is still owing it to me because she said, uh, she said “when we come back, the first money we will save up will be your wedding present and some present for Mama for letting us stay here.” Because they had no money, at all, [SC: Mm-hmm.] when they, ‘till they came back again and then they, he made a lot of money and they bought a . . . .
