About Giuseppe Ippolito
Grandpop or Guisseppe(Joseph) arrived with his wife Rosa and daughter, Guisseppa(Josie) in America on September 20, 1900 (on the Kaiser Wilhelm II, which departed from Naples, Italy and landed in New York). He was 22 years of age. He was born on July 21, 1878. They went to Philadelphia to join other relatives and later opened a grocery store near 5th and Christian Streets. Around 1922 they moved to Trenton and he built the family home at 733 Brunswick Ave., still standing today. By then, all their children were born. Guisseppe and Rosa opened a grocery store that lasted into the mid 1940s. During the Great Depression, they would extend credit to people in North Trenton, knowing that some of them would never repay.
Later in life Guisseppe worked at a metals fabricator, pipes and tubing I believe, down the street on Brunswick Ave. He used to walk me to Jefferson School when I was 7 years old, saying goodbye when across the street from his factory. Sometimes, on weekends he'd take me to the Villaba Hall to sip his beer and play some bocci ball with his friends. Grandpop was rather tall, no nonsense but kind to all. --submitted by grandson, Joseph F. Ippolito (on or about January 21, 2009). edited by great grandson, Carl M. Ippolito as to birthdates, dates of arrival from Italy (on January 22, 2009).
