Profiles

The Sicily project is a listing of projects for places within Sicily. Try the following to make the most of it and interact with others with similar interests:

  1. join any of these comune projects for places you have an interest in by clicking on the commune name link and then click on "Actions" and "Join Project" in the top right of each project. This gives you easier visibility to see profiles relevant to the comune that are in the project.
  2. view the "project collaborators" list for each of these projects to see who else has interest in that commune. I recommend sending them a request to collaborate (Actions --> Request to Collaborate) to have easier visibility to their public profiles when they accept your request.

Please feel free to add relevant profiles to any of the commune projects.

If you have people you would like to add to Geni, a couple ways of making this simpler are

  1. SmartCopy - a browser extension to copy a family at a time from another site to Geni
  2. GEDCOM import - if you have a large amount of people to add that are not on Geni this will add them to Geni and find "Tree Matches" where there is overlap with existing profiles on Geni.

Family Names/Progenitors Lists

Some Sub-projects of the Sicily project contain a list of family names found there along with the earliest progenitors with that name. This list is intended to include the earliest ancestor with the various family names found within that place. (The best example of this is found in the Altavilla Milicia project.) The basic criteria for being included in a progenitors list are the following:

  • born in this place
  • lived in this place
  • married in this place
  • died in this place
  • had a child that was born in this place Every earliest profile with the various family names (or sometimes when a family name is not known) should belong on at least one progenitors list. If a place name is not mentioned specifically in their profile anywhere you should include them in the progenitors list of their spouse or earliest descendant is on.

Listing out names and their progenitors like this can be helpful to quickly see which names were fund in a town and who is their earlist ancestor.

Sometimes it makes sense to add speculative members to the list as a way of keeping track of loose ends. For example, Giovenco and Gariti are two names common in Altavilla Milicia. If I find someone in an Altavilla Milicia family in Chicago that married a Giovenco or a Gariti I would add this Giovenco or Gariti to the Altavilla Milicia progenitors list because the odds would be high that the Giovenco or Gariti is also from Altavilla Milicia. This is a way of keeping track of loose ends in the tree and to find people that need to be researched further to see if they connect to the rest of the Giovenco or Gariti family. They can then be removed if they connect to a Giovenco or Gariti already on the progenitors list or in some cases removed and added to the proper progenitors list within a different Sicilian commune.

A note should also be included with each one indicating the criteria they met to be on that list. For example someone from Marineo may be on the Altavilla Milicia progenitors list because their great-great-grandson lived in Altavilla Milicia and this would be difficult to see at a glance and would explain that they are not on that list in error.
