About Gladys May Cowen

Gladys May Cowen (née Whitehouse)

Born in West Brunswick (Liverpool) England. Her mother died in England when she was very young. She traveled to Boston from Liverpool on board the ship 'Cymric' in 9 Feb 1909 (A copy of the ship's passenger manifest can be found under 'Sources'). On board were her father, two brothers and an elder sister. The ship RMS Cymric was later torpedoed during WWI by the same German U-boat (U-20) that sank the RMS Lusitania.

After arrival in Boston, they lived with her paternal aunt (Caroline Whitehouse Wyatt) and her husband (Robert Wyatt).

She met and married John Marshall Cowen and they had 11 children.
