About Golda Ryfka Lach
Yaakov Lach provided the following information on September 21, 2012:
"I have the marriage document of Golda and Szlama. It is in Russian, and was translated for me by Dr. Barry Sieger, as follows:
In the village of Serok on 16/28 November, 1876, at 11 AM, Szlama Lach, single, 18 (b. 1858), the son of Leibl and Bashi, living with his parents in the village of Rozan, married Goldy Rwfka Lewinstein, single, 17 (born 1859), daughter of Joseph and Chudis, living with her parents in the village of Serok.
The rest is about witnesses, standard premarital agreement, announcement at Sabbath, etc."
So, she was born 1859, rather than 1861. My father remembers her, from before the war! Sincerely Yaakov Lach
The date of 1861 was obtained from the Jewish Records Indexing, Poland, under the Chorzele town where Golda Ryfka was born: Chorzele 1837-63 Plock Gubernia / Warszawa Province Located at 53°16’ 20°54’ Last updated July 2003
Golda's father, Rabbi Joseph Lewinstein, became the Rabbi in Chorzele at the age of 18 in 1860. He was also married in 1860 in Chorzele. The birth date of 1861 seems more plausible. The birth certificate of Golda Ryfka states that her date of birth was December 6, 1861. It is possible that Golda Ryfka was given an older age in her marriage certificate because, as a 15 year old, she may have been legally considered too young to marry or else it was a mistake by the scribe.
