About Gov. Harrison Askey
From Arkansas to Texas
Obit-Gonzales Inquirer Jan. 10, 1901
Governor Harrison Askey died this morning at 7:40 o'clock at his home about five miles west of Gonzales, aged 80 years. His remains will be interred in the family cemetery near his home on Friday morning at 10 o'clock.
The announcement of the death of Mr. Askey was a surprise to citizens of Gonzales. He was not sick long, having been taken with a case of the grip lately. Governor Askey was one of the old citizens of the county and perhaps one of the best known. His life has been passed at his home west of the river. For years his residence was the only one for miles west of the river, and standing upon a high hill, was the beacon-light for the traveler in the early days and many sought refuge from the storm under its hospitable roof. He was a generous, kind-hearted man and was ever ready to extend a helping hand to his fellowman. Mr. Askey, for many years in his younger life, was the breeder of fine running horses and was the raiser of Joe Murray, who held the fastest running record in the world's history at the time for a seven-eights mile. The Rebel stock, of which he was the breeder, has quite a reputation in the history of fast horses. Many friends in the county, and especially west of the river, will hear with the sorrow of the death of their old friend.
