About Gov. Knute Nelson, US Senate & Congress
Knute Nelson, born on the farm Kvilekval (Qvileqval), Evanger, Voss, Norwegian-American politician (Republican), came to the U.S. in 1849 and grew up in Wisconsin. Participated in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1864, later legal education. Member of Wisconsin's legislature from 1868 to 1869 and of the Minnesota Senate from 1875 to 1878. Nelson was a member of Congress (House of Representatives) 1883-1892, 1892 was chosen as Minnesota's governor, re-elected 1894. From 1895 until his death he was a member of the U.S. Senate.
