GEDCOM Note

Given a farm by his father on Cove Creek. He married Nancy Clementine McGinnis. He moved to Oregon and homesteaded Spring of 1900.

According to BOOK: Governor or "Gov" Daniel and his wife Nancy Clementine (McGinnis) Daniel were 39 and 38 years old when they left their Cove Creek ranch in Raleigh County, WV with 7 children in the spring of 1900. Monte, the oldest son, was 17 years old. They came to their homestead on Middle Point, or Utopia. The family traveled by train from west Virginia to La Grande, then by wagon to Wallowa. THe Thompson family traveled on the same train from West Virginia.

Their 1st and 3rd sons died before the family moved. Two otehr children, Donna and Marvin Guy, died in infancy in Oregon. A daughter, Jessie was aborn in Oregon in 1901.

Luring htem west was the Homestead Act of 1862. Under the Act, a family head, at least 21 years of age, could obtain 160 acres of hte public domain; to retain ownership, after paying a registration fee ranging from $26 to $34, he had to live ont ehland for 5 continuous years. Nancy's brother, Elsworth "Wirt" McGinnis, and family were already on Middle Point. Albert Daniel, Gov's brother, also homesteaded on Middle Point. Benjamin McGinnis, Nancy's brother, came 2 years later, settling on Powwatka. Blackburn Ballard, Nancy's cousin, also came. They were all from West Virginia.

Governor, like many other West Virginians, didn't want his sons to be coal miners, or his duaghters to marry coal miners. "Gov" served as postmaster at Utopia from 1908-1911. Children in teh Daniel home were: Monte C. (1883-1972), Ode (1885-1906), Rosa (1889-1910), Louise Br4ooke (1891-1969), Amelia Clieda (1894-1980), Myrtle Rae, Pearle, and Jessie (1901-1951). As perviously mentioned, Donna and Marvin Guy died in infancy.

Nancy was known as Aunt Clem. She was an active midwife, often traveling by horseback and sometimes at night with a lantern. After they moved to Wallowa, Dr. John B. Gregory frequently asked her to accompany him on maternity calls.

The "Gov" Daniel family moved to Wallowa from Middle Point around 1915. There is a little cemetery on Middle Point. The Governor Daniel family have 4 children buried there: Ode, Rosa, Donna and Marvin Guy. Also buried there is a little girl of the Albert Daniel family and 2 members of the Wirt McGinnis family.

I have another birth date as 1860 and another death date as Aug. 11, 1922 in Wallowa, Oregon.
