I9891 Elva Lawton, The Descendants of Thomas Lawton of Portsmouth, Rhode Island (New York: 1949), [Page]; digital images, Heritage Quest Online, He m. (2nd) before 1674, Grace (Parsons) [SIC] Bailey, widow of William Bailey (d. 20 Jul 1670) and daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth Parsons. Thomas and Grace probably separated before 14 Jun 1676 when she complained to the Assembly of neglect by her husband and was awarded 6s a week in silver during her lifetime or until her husband should maintain her. On 20 Apr 1677, Thomas made an agreement with his stepson, John Bailey for her care and maintenance and, in his will, he bequeathed his wife, Grace, £12 per annum for life. Thomas' will was written 6 Jun 1674 and proved 29 Sep 1681.

William Bailey married Grace Parsons, daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth (sic) Parsons of Portsmouth, R. I. This would indicate that he probably came to this country while a young man and unmarried. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth married Thomas Lawton, and died some time subsequent to 1677.

Children of (I) William1 and Grace Bailey.

  • 2. John* Bailey, d. 1736.
  • 3. Joseph2 Bailey.
  • 4. Edward2 Bailey, d. 1712.
  • 5. Hugh2 Bailey, d. 1724.
  • 6. Stephen2 Bailey, b. 1665; d. 1724, Oct. 17.

According to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary of R. I., the evidence is conclusive as to Wm. Bailey's having sons John and Hugh, and that there is ground for belief that Joseph, Edward and Stephen were also his sons.

Daniel Lawton 2nd married, before 1674 (also seen as on 20 Apr 1677) (also seen as 8/9/1663) to Grace (Parsons) Bailey. He was the widower of Elizabeth Salisbury, who died after November 1654. Daniel & Grace had no children together.

In the Probate records for  14 JUN 1676:

Thomas's wife Grace, having presented her many grievances to the town often, and to the Assembly several times for due and sufficient maintenance, she being much neglected in her husband's absence, it was therefore ordered by the Assembly that 6s per week shall be paid by his agent Daniel Lawton, and an inventory of movable goods in her custody to be taken, which inventory Daniel Lawton shall have. Grace to have the privilege of chamber she is now possessed of, and use of necessary movables, and the rights of her or any of her children now or in future to any estate are not cut off.

(comment: Shurleff suggests this was by the town for her support while her husband was away / disabled in King Philip's War)

Apparently Grace Parson's 2nd marriage did not go well:
