About Grace Cooke
In 1603, when he was 40 years old, Thomas married Grace Upcher (aka Upshur), about 20 years younger (b. 1580), from the nearby village of Fordham, Essex. Her father was a yeoman farmer named Joseph Upcher[1] and she had an uncle who was a noted cleric in the Church of England at Fordham and London.
Thomas and Grace (Upcher) Cooke had four children:[2]
- Colonel Thomas COOKE, Esq., born 1604; m(1). Elizabeth DUKE 1630 in Pebmarsh - 4 surviving children; m(2). Judith ST JOHN (Widow Percival) 1645 in Essex and died Nov 1682 in Pebmarsh, Essex.
- Grace COOKE, born 1606; m. John BENNETT 1632 in Great Yealdham, Essex - 2 children; died after 1641 in Great Yealdham.
- Joseph COOKE, born 1608; emigrated to Cambridge MA ca. 1635; m. Elizabeth HAYNES 1642 in MA - 1 daughter; died May 1699 in Pebmarsh, Essex
- Colonel George COOKE, born 1610; emigrated to Cambridge MA ca. 1635; m. Anne [??] - 4 children; died April 1652 (fighting in Ireland = British Army); he was Governor of Wexford, Ireland, under Cromwell(1650-52) .
After his wife Grace died in about 1616, Thomas Cooke, the Younger, married a second time to a local widow, Susan [Robins ??], in about 1617, in Great Yealdham, Essex. They had no children together and lived in Great Yealdham.
