About Grand Rabbi Mordechai David Unger, Admor Bobov-45

Fifth Rebbe(s) of Bobov [dispute]

(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Mordechai David Unger (מרדכי דוד אונגער), disputed Grand Rabbi of the Bobov Hasidic movement, was born in 1954 to Grand Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Unger of Dombrov. He is a son-in-law of the late Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam of Bobov, the fourth Bobover Rebbe. Rabbi Mordechai David is regarded by many as the Bobover Rebbe ( כ"ק אדמו"ר מבאבוב, שליט"א ).

Following the death of Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam, a dispute arose. Many Bobover Hasidim claimed his sons-in-law as the successors, splitting the title: Rabbi Mordechai Dovid Unger as their Rebbe (אדמו"ר) and Rabbi Yehoshua Rubin as their Ruv (אבד"ק). Many others however claimed his younger brother Rabbi Ben Zion Aryeh Leibish Halberstam, the Rav Hatzuir (Junior Ruv), as the successor. Both groups of Hasidim claim their Rabbi as the rightful inheritor of the position of Bobover Rebbe. This dispute is currently before a Beth Din (Jewish court). Currently, Rabbi Ben Zion Aryeh Leibish Halberstam is the Rebbe in the Bobover Beis Medrash, while Rabbi Mordechai David's Hasidim have established a temporary headquarters, and a weekdays and Shabbos Beis Medrash.

Mordechai Duvid Unger (מרדכי דוד אונגער) was born in 1954 to Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Unger of Dombrov. He is the younger son-in-law of the late Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam, the fourth of Bobover Rebbe, and the second to oldest grandson of Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam, the third Bobover Rebbe.

Following the death of his father-in-law, Grand Rabbi Naftali Zvi Halberstam, in 2005, a part of the Bobov Chasidim favored him as their Rebbe. He is currently the first Bobover-45 Rebbe (45-אדמו"ר מבאבוב), (meaning: the Bobov 45th'er Rebbe - named after a street name in the "Borough Park" neighbourhood in Brooklyn, New York, where the center of his community is renting their headquarters location), and the other son-in law, Rabbi Yehoshua Rubin, is Bobover-45 Rav (אבד"ק באבוב-45
