She was born in November 1879 as Guurtje Hillegonds in the country village Sint Maarten(which means: Saint Martin), in the northwestern part of the Dutch western province Noord-Holland, daughter of the 27 years aged laborer Jacob Hillegonds and Guurtje Eriks, who married on 8 August 1878 in the country village Sint Maarten too.

Guurtje's sister Marijtje and brother Arie were also born in Sint Maarten, on 25 August 1878 and 14 April 1881.

The family of the 2 years aged G Hillegond arrived in 1881 on the ship Louisa Price at the port of New York, USA and settled in Chicago, Illinois, where the children Annie (May 1884), John (June 1889), Peter (December 1890) and Gerrit (May 1892) were born.

Her mother Guurtje Eriks died in March 1895 at the age of 38 years, very probably in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Source death date: Pieter Schager, e-mail December 2014. Her father Jacob Hillegonds remarried on 25 November 1896, very likely in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to the 12 years younger Christiana Van Driel, since April 1894 widow of Andries (Andrew) Brink. In March 1898 Jacob and Christina Hillegonds had in Chicago son Jacob Hillegonds, thus a half-brother of Guurtje aka Gertie.

In June 1900 Gertie Hillegonds (20 y, born in November 1879 in Holland, servant), her father Jacob Hillegonds (46, August 1853, Holland, immigrated in 1881, labor foreman), her stepmother Christiana (34, June 1865, Holland, immigrated in 1878), her (step)siblings Arie (19, April 1881, Holland, iron roller), Annie (16, May 1884, Illinois), John (11, June 1889, Illinois), Leendert [Blink] (9, August 1890, Illinois), Peter (9, December 1890, Illinois), Gerrit (8, May 1892, Illinois), Henry [Blink] (7, May 1893, Illinois), Andrew [Blink] (5, September 1894, Illinois) and her half-brother Jacob (2, March 1898, Illinois) lived in their own home at Wabash Avenue in Hyde Park Township, Ward 34 of south Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

Gertie Hillegonde married on 27 May 1902 in Lake County, in the utter Northwestern part of Indiana to Henry Moes, who had the same age and was also born in the Netherlands.

Gertie and Henry had in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on 8 February 1904 daughter Jennie and on 11 December 1906 son John. On 27 September 1908 they had in Cook County, Illinois son Jacob Moes.

In 1910 Gertie (30 y, born in Holland), her husband Henry J Moes (30, Holland), their children Jennetta (6, Illinois), Gertrude (4, Indiana), John (3, Illinois) and Jacob (1, Illinois) lived in Ward 33 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1920 Gertrude (40), her husband Henry Moes (40), their children Gertrude (14), John (13), Jacob (11), Sadie (9, Illinois), Arthur (5, Indiana) and Cristena (1, Indiana) lived in Calumet [Township], Lake County, in the utter northwestern part of Indiana.

In 1930 Gertrude (50), her husband Henry Moes (50), their children Gertrude (24), Sadie (19), Arthur (16), Cristiana (11) and his mother Jennie Moes (78, Holland) lived in Highland, Lake County, Indiana.

In April 1940 Gertrude (60), her husband Henry Moes (60, painter contractor) and their daughter Gertrude (34) lived at an own home, worth $3500, in Highland, North Township, Lake County, Indiana. They lived in 1935 at the same place.
