ORIGIN: Biddenden, Kent MIGRATION: 1637 FIRST RESIDENCE: Scituate OCCUPATION: Innkeeper (on 7 June 1648, "Richard Sillis allowed to sell wine at Seteaat" [PCR 2:125]). CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admitted to Scituate church 24 December 1637 [NEHGR 9:280]. FREEMAN: Admitted freeman of Plymouth Colony, 4 September 1638, and added to list of freemen of 7 March 1636/7 [PCR 1:53, 96]. In Scituate section of 1639 Plymouth Colony list of freemen [PCR 8:175]. EDUCATION: Signed his will. His inventory included "a few old books" valued at 4s. OFFICES: Plymouth petit jury, 4 September 1638, 1 June 1641 [PCR 1:96, 7:20]. Grand jury, 1 June 1641 [PCR 2:16].
Scituate highway surveyor, 3 March 1639/40, 2 June 1640 [PCR 1:141, 156]. Deputy to Plymouth Colony General Court, 2 June 1640 [PCR 1:155].
His inventory included "1 musket and rest" valued at 12s. ESTATE: In his accounting of houses built in Scituate, Rev. John Lothrop included in mid-1636 "The young master Edward Fitsrandolf's, now Goodman Syllice" [NEHGR 10:43]. (The date of the transfer from FitzRandolph to Sillis is unknown.)
On 28 December 1640, "John Lathrope of Barnestable ..., minister," sold to "Richard Scillis of Situate ..., planter, one dwlling house together with one outhouse thereto belonging together with five acres of land [PCR 12:71]. On 1 December 1646, Timothy Hatherly of Scituate sold to "Richard Sillis, planter," of Scituate, one-thirtieth part of three-quarters of the land granted to Andrews, Beauchamp, Shirley and Hatherly [PCR 12:158; ScitTR 2:70-72 et passim .
In his will, dated 17 January 1653[/4?] and presented at court 5 March 165[5/]6, "Richard Sealis, planter," bequeathed to "my daughter the lawful heirs of my body Hannah Winchester and Hester Jackson my whole part and share in the land commonly known by the name of Conihasset or Cohasset ... equally to be divided betwixt them"; to "my daughter Hester Jackson," moveables; to "Samuell Jackson my best hat"; to "Samuell Jackson and John Winchester all my wearing apparel equally to be divided betwixt them"; to "my daughter Hannah Winchester," moveables; to "Samuell Jackson," moveables, including "one great Bible, one sermon book of Mr. Preston's of God's All Sufficiency, one musket and bandoliers"; to "my daughter Hester Jackson the wife of Samuell Jackson," moveables; to "my wife and two daughters," moveables; to "Samuell Jackson," rent on marsh, "which marsh is to be delivered up to my daughters"; to "my daughters Hester Jackson and Hannah Winchester my house, barn and land ... and in case my good wife Egline Seallis shall desire to live in said house," she may do so; residue to "my dear wife Egline Sealis," she to be executrix [PCPR 2:1:34].
The inventory of the estate of "Richard Sillis," taken 26 March 1656, totalled £67 1s. 4d., of which £17 was real estate: "the house and land," £17 [PCPR 2:1:31-32].
On 12 November 1696, there was "granted to the successor of Richard Sillis ten acres of upland and five acres of swampland" [ScitTR 1:448-49, 504]. On 9 March 1702/3, there was granted to "the heirs or successors of Richard Siliss" seven acres [ScitTR 1:513]. BIRTH: Baptized Biddenden, Kent, 26 November 1681, son of John and Mary (Stedman) Sillis [NEHGR 65:319, 321]. DEATH: Between 17 January 1653[/4?] (date of will) and 5 March 165[5/]6 (probate of will). MARRIAGE: (1) Biddenden, Kent, 14 April 1604 Phebe Chrisfeilde [NEHGR 70:349]. "The wife of Richard Seelis" was buried at Biddenden 10 August 1612 [NEHGR 65:320].
(2) Biddenden, Kent, 4 May 1613 Margery Lea [NEHGR 65:320]. (Elizabeth French suggests that she was a widow, born Margery Ashenden and married to Thomas Lea [NEHGR 65:321]. She is not seen in any New England record.)
(3) Scituate 15 December 1637 Eglin (Hatherly) (Downes) Hanford [NEHGR 9:286]. She was named in her husband's will on 17 January 1653[/54?]. CHILDREN: With first wife

COMMENTS: There are some unresolved problems regarding the early children of Richard Sillis. French notes a baptism of a child of a "Richard Seelis" at nearby Frittenden on 1 August 1601 [NEHGR 65:320]. If this is the immigrant Richard Sillis, he must have had yet another wife, prior to Phebe Chrisfeilde, when he was not yet twenty, so this is probably another Richard Sillis.
The three children ascribed to Richard Sillis and his first wife were baptized much too close together. The Biddenden parish register should be reexamined on this point. If the marriages for Margaret and Elizabeth Sillis are correctly assigned to the daughters of this Richard Sillis, then they clearly did not come to New England, and Sillis chose not to leave them anything in his will.
Richard Sillis was one of three men chosen on 4 July 1648 to arbitrate a dispute between Henry Merritt and Joseph Tilden [PCR 12:161-62]. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1911 and in 1916 Elizabeth French published English records for the family of Richard Sillis [NEHGR 65:319-22, 70:349].
