About Hans John Brubacher

According to Harry M. Strickler in his book Forerunners, page 93. one John Brubacher, emigrated from Bern, Switzerland and came to New York 16 June 1710. On the 27th Sept 1717, he (in company with Christian Hershey) took our a warrant for 1,000 acres of land lying on the Little Connestaga in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pa (about 3 miles west of the present city of Lancaster). Tradition says that he was accompanied by three brothers. The four immigrants were Jacob, Henry, Abraham and John.

In the year 1718 he and the said- Christian Hershey divided the above tract of 1,000 acres into two equal parts by running a line east and west, Brubaker taking the southern part, viz., 500 acres, on which tract he built the first grist and saw mill in Lancaster county (so tradition says), the mill property being located on the little Conestoga Creek, at what is now called "Abbeyville". On May 13, 1728, John Brubaker and his wife, Anna, sold and conveyed 150 acres of the 500 acres mentioned, including the mill property, to one Christian Stoheman. John Brubaker and his wife Anna had the following children From Phares Brubaker Gibbles book):

In the summer of 1717, immigrants Hans Brubaker and Christian Hershey, from Palatinate on the Rhine arrived in Lancaster County, PA. Together, they purchased a 1,000 acre tract of land from Penn's agents. Hans' brother John arrived at the same time and purchased an additional 200 acres of land that adjoined the Brubaker/Hershey tract. His other brother Jacob also arrived in America simultaneously. The original Land Warrant for parcels near Conestoga and Pequea Creeks were issued 22 Oct 1717 to Hans Pupather.
The 1,000 acre Brubaker/Hershey tract was divided by them "by mutual consent" in1718. This division was legalized with the Christian Hershey heirs between 1729 and 1733. Hans erected farm buildings, a grist mill and the first Mennonite meetinghouse in Lancaster County on his property. Hans and his heirs purchased additional lands in Hempfield Township, Elizabeth Township, Rapho Township and in Page County, Virginia. Hans Brubacher (John Brubaker), often indicated "A-1"; in Brubaker genealogy nomenclature, remarried another Anna and had a total of nine sons.

Both Hans and Annely's remains were buried in Rohrerstown or Hempfield Village, Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania on the original homestead. The "BRUBAKER-BRUBACHER" marker is on the family homestead near where Hans and his wife are likely interred
