This old family bible came with Hans Jurgen Linde on board the ship Leijden to the Cape in 1753. A minister from a nearby mission visited Jacobus Linde and saw the open bible near a window on a table and inquired about it. Jacobus admitted that nobody understands the German anymore. He said the minister could use it at the Genadendal Missionary. There it stayed for 99 (ninety nine) years. During a visit in 1938 a minister from Genadendal Missionary to the Beyers family at Leeuwkraal and noticed a photo of Jan Linde (son of Jacobus Linde). He mentioned the old bible at the missionary that was not used anymore. The family was very excited to get the old bible back. My mother ZMM "Grace" Beyers became the seventh generation keeper of the Family Bible. She loaned it to the Swellendam Museum, where it was displayed for many years. About 1993 we became aware that it was not displayed anymore and made inquiries. The staff said they had too many bibles and it was stored somewhere in a storeroom. I (MD de Wit born du Toit) fetched the Bible and am now the eight generation custodian.
