HANS LAURETZEN3 DUYTS (LAURENTS2, RICHARD "DIRK"1) was born September 23, 1644 in New Amsterdam (NYC), and died 1710 in Staten Island, New York. He married (1) MARRITJE SATRYS. He married (2) KATHERINE MARY SAWTELL. He married (3) JANNETJE JURIANS 1675. He married (4) SARAH VINCENT FOUNTAINE 1685, daughter of JOHN VINCENT and SUSANNAH BLAISE. She was born 1649, and died 1740 in Middlesex, New Jersey.

     Hans Laurens Duyts, was the third child born to Laurens Duyts and his wife, Utje Jansen Duyts. He was born in New Amsterdam (NYC), and was baptized on the 23rd of September, 1644. 

About 1670, in New Amsterdam, (NYC), Hans Laurens married Marritje Satyrs who was born about 1650. They had four children who were James Hans Duyts, baptized on the 31st of December 1671, Catherine Duyts, baptized on the 13th of June, 1674, William Duyts and Issac Duyts. These children, named on a land deed by Hans Laurens Duyts, were born at Staten Island, New York.
In 1685, Hans Laurens married again. His second wife was Sarah Vincent, daughter of John Vincent and Suzanna Blaise. Sarah had been married previously and her first husband was Anthony fountain, they had one son, Vincent Fountain.

Hans Laurens and Sarah had one child, son John Laurens Duyts, who was born in 1687, while the family was living on Staten Island, Richmond County, New York.

Hans was generally known as Hans Laurens and was among the freeholders chosen for public Office. As a farmer he was assigned crop markers for identification of his livestock.

Hans died after 1708, and at the time of his death, it is believed that he was still located on Staten Island. Sarah died about 1740.

He was baptized in the Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, September 28, 1644. Jochiem Pietersen Kuyter was standing in as one of his sponsors. Hans died after 1706, probably on Staten Island, Richmond County, New York.

He probably married as his first wife Mary Sawtell (Sartell) on October, 7, 1670, in New York City. Mary was the daughter of James and Ellen (------------) Sawtell of Newtown, Long Island, New York. The records of the Court of Assizes in New York contains the marriage of Hans Lorrison and Mary Sartell. She appears as "Marritje Satyrs" at the baptism of her son, "Jeams" in 1671. (1)>

 Sarah's maiden name was supposedly Vincent, but no proof has been 

found which shows a relationship to any of the known Vincents who settled early in New Amsterdam. "It seems extremely probable that by her second husband she was the mother of John Dye...." [Jacobus, Dye Family of Prince William and Fairfax Counties, Virginia in NGS Quarterly; 45: 130], but considering the birth date of John - ca. 1687, and the death of Sarah's first husband - ca. 1696, this seems highly improbable.

One can only imagine how the traumatic events of November and December 1658 affected the children of Laurens and Ytie. Hans, being the youngest child, perhaps accompanied his mother to Dutch Kills, Long Island and the farm of Jan Parecell. His brother Jan, was in Harlem in 1662 and Hans went there is 1667 when he was on the excise accounts from January 16 to January 22, charged for purchase of beer. On one occasion it is noted he purchased "one ton of strong beer" The British take over of New Netherlands in 1644 caused some ill feelings and lawlessness among the residents, who found themselves in increasing numbers in the courts of law. On Octover 24, 1667, Hans was cited with others as being "a rebel" and fined forty guilders together with costs. After that he retuned to Newtown Long Island and was the defendant in a case involving the loss of a canoe by Jan Parcell's neighbor, George Stevenson, in February of 1667/68. He was a witness in another case heard on December 2, 1669. After his marriage, on October 9, 1672, it was written that, I Hans Loroson have should and maide over unto John Parsell of Mashpott Kills all my right and titell that I bought of Burger Youress of the same place and John Parsell doe promise to cleare Hanc Loroson of all debts dues and demands for sd. Burger Youress wife concerning the land...(Both Hans and John Parcell made their marks in lieu of signatures on document) In 1673, Hans Laurens and John Russell are allowed to mow Captain Mannings Valley in Mespat and after so doing, report when further agreement shall be entered into with him. In 1677 he was granted an eighty acre tract in the New Dorp section of Staten Island. He made his mark on documents to New Utrecht (Brooklyn) in 1679, the year that his brother, Jan died. Jan purchased two half lots there in 1677. He was one of those who took inventory and appraised the estate of John Bodine on Staten Island, February 11, 1695. On December 29, 1699, Hans Laurens land at New Dorp was mentioned as part of a boundary description. He is listed on Staten Island on the census of 1706, age sixty three. That was the last time his name appears in the public records.

The mix of nationalities and dialects in early New York, plus the low literacy level, make it difficult to find consistent spelling of most names in 1652. A goodly company of English men arrived in this colony from New England, among them, we assume, were Janes and Henry Sawtell, who are found in Newtown Long Island records from the 1660's into the 1680's. They probably came from Groton and Watertown, Massachusetts.

Antoine Fountaine and Sara Hance had 2 children.

Hans Laurens Duyts, the son of Laurens Duyts who was also an early inhabitant of New Amsterdam, had two sons by two different wives. The first one called himself James Hans Dey and the second called himself John Laurens Dye. Their descendents carried on the spelling of the name for the most part. Even though it was spelled differently, it was consistently pron ounced "die" by both branches of the family.
