  • James Hanson
  • Jeams Jans

note - all that is known is his baptismal date - over the years it has been wrongfully entered as his birth date - till proven that both occured on the same day - the date should be entered as BAPTISMAL DATE ONLY

James Hans Dey was the son of Hans Duyts and Marritje Snyderken. James Hans Dey was born about December 31, 1671 on Staten Island, New York and he died around 1745 in Matchaponix, Middlesex County, New Jersey (X on the right on the map at the bottom of this page).

He married (1) Margaret Dey on August 3, 1699. She was born about 1685 in Kings, New York and her father is listed as a John Dey (?). She died around 1714.

James Hans Dey and his half-brother John Laurens Dey were born in Staten Island, New York. Perth Amboy, New Jersey, across the river from Staten Island, is on the Pennsylvania Railroad. South from Perth Amboy, the railroad goes through a number of stations including South Amboy in the northern part of the county.

John Laurens Dey purchased a farm near Cranbury, Middlesex County, New Jersey in about 1725. Cranbury Station is on the Penn Railroad near the southern end of the county. Cranbury was a few miles to the west, near the edge of the image.

Matchaponix, New Jersey, is seven miles due east of Cranbury, New Jersey. Thus, the two half- brothers lived a short distance from each other during the later parts of their lives.

James Hans Dey and wife Margaret had seven children:

  • James Dey was born on July 12, 1706 in Staten Island, New York and died before October 12, 1784 in South Amboy, Middlesex County, New York. He married Dinah Tiller who was born on December 2, 1703.
  • Lawrence (Laurens) Dey was born on May 20, 1708 in Staten Island, New York and died before February 9, 1792 in South Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married Anne Dey who was the daughter of John Laurens Dey, his "step" uncle. John Laurens Dey and Hans Laurens Dey were step brothers.
  • Mary Dey was born about 1712
  • Margaret Dey was born in 1712 on Staten Island, New York and died on November 27, 1797
  • Isaac Dey was born about 1714 on Staten Island, New York and he died after February 5, 1754 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey (X on the west side of the map to the right. South Amboy is about miles to the east of Piscataway. Cranbury is about 9 miles south of Piscataway).
  • John Dey was born about 1716 in Staten Island, New York
  • William Dey was born about 1717 in Staten Island, New York and he died in 1785.

The majority give his son Laruens duyts as the first settler - Laurens and his wife arrived in New Netherland in July of 1639 on the ship "The Fire of Troy". This was a private armed vessel, engaged by Captain Jochem Kuyter, also from Holstein, a man of wealth and distinction who sailed from Hoorn, bringing with him farmers, herdsmen and laborers to start a new Colony, located in present Harlem. the documentation for Laurens arrival is:

Arnold J. F. Van Laer, New York Historical Manuscripts Dutch Vol I; 1638-1642 ; Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc., Baltimore, MD. 1974 ; pp 196-197 ; Morris Library, University of DE, Newark : Lease from Jonas Bronck (a confererate of Captain Kuyter), to Pieter Andriessen and Lourens Duyts. "They shall be at liberty to plant tobacco and maize, on the express condition that every two years they shall clear new pieces of land.... furthermore, Pieter Andriesz and Lourens Duyts bind and pledge their persons and properties for the payment of what Mr. Bronck has disbersed for them on board the ship De Brant van Troyen, 120 guilders, 16 stivers, of which Pieter Andriessen must pay fl. 81:4 and Lourens Duyts fl. 49:12. Done in Fort Amsterdam, 21st of July 1639." Bronck's farm became the center of the Bronx.
