About Hans Adam Mueller

http://www.wendtroot.com/cockrill/d0004/d0004notes/MassanuttenHisto... Adam Miller is now conceded to be the first white settler in the Shenandoah Valley. He located near Massanutten in 1726, as shown by his naturalization certificate. Abraham Strickler and other Swiss settlers came with him to the Valley, no doubt, as they purchased land from Jacob Stover, the Swiss land agent, at the same time in the same locality, and joined in the same petition in 1733 to the Governor of Virginia for the purpose of having title to lands purchased from Stover confirmed.

As the name Massanutting Town was so early applied to the place, the supposition is that it was an old Indian trading post long before the first settlers purchased land there. This might explain why Wm. Beverly, on Apr. 30, 1732, wrote to a friend in Williamsburg asking him to secure for him a grant of 15,000 acres "Including a place called Massanutting Town." Beverly also refers to it as an "Old Field," which indicates that there were no trees on the land. Probably the entire river bottoms were devoid of trees. Kercheval in his history of the Valley, says that great areas of the valley were covered with grass when the first settlers arrived. John Ledere, a German explorer, visited the valley in 1669 and drew a map of it, making the valley "Savannae" meaning prairie."

2.Adam2 Miller (Johann Peter1 Mueller)3,4,5 was born November 17, 1703 in Schresheim, Baden, Germany, and died 1783 in Near Elkton, Rockingham Co., Virginia. He married Anna Maria Barbara Koger in Germany, daughter of Joss Koger and Anna Lowenberger. She was born 1716 in Auggen, Loerrach, Baden, Germany, and died in Near Elkton, Rockingham Co., Virginia. Notes for Adam Miller: Adam (Mueller) Miller was born at Schersheim, Germany about 1703. The family name was spelled Mueller in Germany. His father lived and grew up in Lamsheim. Adam came to America in 1720 to Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. He and his wife and an unmarried sister moved to Williamsburg, Virginia in 1724. In 1726 -1727 he visited the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and settled there with his family at Hawksbill Creek in present day Page Co. They were the first settlers in the valley. He was naturalized in 1741. Later they settled in what would become Rockingham Co. In 1742 he purchased 820Acres including the Lithia Springs near Elkton, Virginia, were he built his first cabin. He built a house near Elkton, Virginia. The house still stands. He was a soldier in the French and Indian War, as shown by military schedule for 1758 in Henning’s Statutes. In Religion he was Lutheran, and was probably buried at St.. Peter’s Church, 4 miles north of Elkton.

From the Moravian Diaries: December 3, 1749, Towards evening a man from another district, Adam Mueller, passed. I told him that I would like to come to his house and preach there. He asked me if I were sent by God. I answered, yes. He said, if I were sent by God I would be welcome, but he said, there are at present so many kinds of people, that often one does not know where they come from. I requested him to notify his neighbors that I would preach on the 5th, which he did. On December 4th, we left Schaub's house, commending the whole family to God. We traveled through the rain across the South Shenandoah to Adam Mueller, who received us with much love. We stayed over night with him. On December 5th, I preached at Adam Mueller's house on John 7: "Whosoever thirsteth let him come to the water and drink." A number of thirsty souls were present. Especially Adam Mueller took in every word and after the sermon declared himself well pleased. In the afternoon we traveled a short distance, staying over night with a Swiss. The conversation was very dry and the word of Christ's sufferings found no hearing.

Adam (Mueller) Miller, a native of "Schresoin," Germany, who settled on the Shenandoah in 1726, near the present village of Elkton, Rockingham County, Virginia, and was the first white settler in the Valley of Virginia of whom there is record evidence. In religion he was a Lutheran. "Old Peter's Church," as it is locally known, but probably correctly St. Peter's, stands about six miles north of Adam Miller's permanent place of residence, and he is believed to be buried there. Rev. I. Conder, of McGaheysville, Va., states in a recent letter, that the records of this church (now lost) showed that the present structure was dedicated in June, 1777.

Children of Adam Miller and Anna Koger are:

+ 3 i. Henry3 Miller. + 4 ii. Anna Barbara Miller, born 1726; died November 27, 1791 in Bear Lithia Springs, Rockingham Co., Virginia. + 5 iii. Elizabeth Catatrina Miller, born December 20, 1734 in Virginia.

6 iv. Adam Miller, born 1738; died 1764 in Virginia.

Notes for Adam Miller: Adam was killed by Indians at the "Roads Massacre".
