Hantie Geldenhuys (1927 - 2021)
Brief overview:
Hantie (94), who lived alone, farmed chickens, and ran a shop on a smallholding farm in Kalbasfontein, Westonaria, was shot twice through the window of her home by an unknown number of armed attackers, on the night of Saturday 28th. Both bullets entered her abdomen. One of the bullets went through her body, and the other bullet was lodged in her body. She passed away on Sunday 29th August 2021 at Leratong Hospital in Krugersdorp.
Hantie was taken to hospital, in a critical condition, where she was given a blood transfusion and received surgery to remove the bullet. A kidney and her spleen, as well as a part of her intestines and one lung had to be removed as the bullets did a lot of damage.
Hantie's boerboel was poisoned prior to her murder, and at the time the family had urged her to go and live with one of them.
Coert Marais, Hantie's nephew, said his aunt had managed to crawl around the bed and call her neighbours over a two-way radio. From there, she crawled to the living room and threw the front door keys through the window so her neighbours could enter.
"She was a strong and brave woman who would do anything for her fellow man.” Marais said.
"Marais, his mother, Bets (85), and aunt, Dawn van Rensburg (77), received the call about the shooting incident around 00:30 and rushed from their farm between Potchefstroom and Paris to Geldenhuys' house. "There were already many people at the scene and one of the neighbors' wives, a nurse, applied pressure to the wound. Aunt Hantie was on the bed when we arrived. There was a lot of blood." Marais says his aunt was still fully conscious and could talk to them. "She did not even say 'eina' (meaning sore) once and did not cry once."
Marais says the events are very traumatic - especially since it is the third similar tragedy in the family.
Josias Renier Willemse, Sias (74), was Hantie’s cousin - a retired farmer, was shot twice in the neck and strangled with neckties, at his home in Balliepark, Potchefstroom on 21st September 2020.
Wilhelmina Francina Liebenberg, Fan (82) was Sias’ sister, who was brutally tortured and murdered in her home in Krugersdorp on 1st August 2011.
No arrests have been made.
Update 07/08/2022: "A year after the murder of Hantie Geldenhuys (94) on her small holding in Kalbasfontein near Westonaria, no one has yet been arrested. Her grandson, Coenraad, now lives in the house where his grandmother was shot dead on August 28th 2021, and runs the farm shop on the premises as his late father, André (68), and grandmother did for years. However, Coenraad is still struggling to find peace and is furious that the investigation into Geldenhuys' murder has not yet yielded anything.
